British Republic

Is it at all possible for the British Isles to undergo a revolution sometime in the early 19th century and become a republic? Could it happen post-Napoleon? What happens to the rest of the Empire? Who would be the most likely leaders in this revolution?

Also, is there a TL with this premise out there? I'd like to read one but the search function is dookie right now.

Not gonna happen even in that time because the monarchy is as an integrated part of the uk as Vodka and guns are to americans and russians.

Besides Britain tried that during Cornwell

Have Britain conquered by another country. Wipe out the entire line of succession. Have Britain then rebel and throw out the occupiers. Since there's no one left who can become monarch, Britain becomes a republic.

Alternatively, you could have a communist revolution in Britain.

Its my understanding that during the early years of Queen Victoria's reign republican sentiment was quite high in the UK.

Ofc this all changes post Victoria's marriage to Albert and the royal familes very successful PR campaign.

So, with the right PoD I would have said it would be a possibility at least in the early to mid 19th century.

Avert the passing of the great reform act. From there chartist groups can continue gaining power until eventually they spark an 1848 style revolution which deposes the Monarchy but which has the support of the whigs in parliament.

In addition to the Days of May, the 1817-1820 period could also work. Another opportunity is just outside your restriction of the 19th Century, but 1795 was a highly tumultuous year.

I asked the same question earlier this year or late last year and didn't get much of a response. It seems that there aren't any timelines-at least dedicated to this topic 0here. If there are I'd be interested in knowing as well.

Have Great Britain perform badly in the Napoleonic wars. The people will rebel and kill the incompetent George III.

Suppose an invasion force à la Look to the West is able to land in Great Britain, you could see a very reactionary response. Once the war is over, and the invasion is defeated, the regime that takes power after may not be looked at with happy eyes, and could very well be unpopular. That could sew the seeds for rebellion, and a possible republic.

1860s are widely regarded as the height of the monarchy's unpopularity in the late 19th century.
Victoria's withdrawal from public life was at its height - prior to the Prince of Wales' illness which attracted sympathy from the public.
A different PM and that sign on Buck Palace might become true - to be let or sold, in consequence of the occupant's declining business.

Hmmmm....me thinks you've never heard of butterflies.

Have Victoria and Albert get assassinate and succeeded by Ernst Augustus of Hanover. They despised that prick so much that by the time the 1840's roll around you may actually find the formation of a solid republican movement. Once his son, a fan of absolutism, comes into power, all bets off, setting the stage for a bloody civil war in the 1890's.

A 1795 PoD intrigues me...

However a PoD during the Seven Years War, resulting in minor changes from 1760 on,... that finally hit a tipping point in 1795 could be interesting, ... Different colonies and revolution and USA, different Canada, and likely a different France all coming into play influencing Great Britain in 1795,... could be interesting.
