British Politics with write-in votes for MPs?

It would have almost zero practical effect. As I understand it write in campaigns very rarely have much impact in the US, in Britain with a stronger party tradition I would be surprised if more than 1 write in Member of Parliament was elected over say three general elections.

Yeah, little in the way of direct effects I'd imagine.
Just more fun when the results are announced and that sort of thing.
Which would of course be potentially awesome.

My understanding is that write-in candidacies sprung up in the US because independents were not always assured of being on the ballot paper for various reasons - as you don't have that problem in the UK, I can't see why they would be introduced. Even if they were introduced, I can't see how they'd have any possible effect - aside from a different political culture etc, write-in candidacies are basically just independents with no organisation.
