British India with the fall of the Home Islands

Suppose, for whatever reason, that the British Home Islands fall to foreign invasion in the 20th century as part of a major European and/or World War.

I don't care who does it, how, or when (won't bring up our favorite Sea Mammal), I'm just interested in what happens next. I can see the white colonies fighting on, but what happens in India? Would the British be able to hold on to the subcontinent or would revolts and mutinies drive them out?

The white colony's are only going to actively fight on if there if at least one other first rate power is allied to the cause. Whoever this is will dictate what the Empire including India will do. An example being if it's the Americans then eventual victory is reasonable assured so India would probably carry on as is (albeit with some to significant unrest as independence movements try to seize their moment). If there is no ally then its a negotiated peace or frosty cold war style international relations with the occupier by the colony's and independence in some form for the rest of the imperial possessions overseas.

WI situations like France Fights ON only work if there is enough power out there on side or with the potential to be on side for the risk of fighting on to be worth it. IOTL The French didn't fight on in 1940 because they felt even with the British that the risk was too great as the chances of victory where ITHO remote. With hindsight we know it would have been worthwhile but they didn't. I suspect the same would hold for this scenario.

Stuart Slade's book, A Mighty Endeavour, is a good story around this notion, part of his The Big One series. Halifax surrenders, and there is some dubiety about the position of the Dominions and colonies. The Dominions choose to fight on, Churchill turns up in Canada and forms a government in exile. Cracking read. Also very interesting about the position of Thailand.
