British Coup?

There were rumors that a coup would have taken place in the 1970's against Harold Wilson's government. What would be the effect if they tried? Would they succeed? How would they govern if they succeeded?

While you people like Sir Walter Walker and David Stirling may have fantasised about the army putting the nation to rights I'm not sure that their views would have had an awful lot of support among the military itself.

I seem to recollec this being discussed a number of times on this board and that the feeling was that the army (and certainly the rank and file) wouldn't have supported such an action.

I don't know much about this, but I can't imagine it getting much further than the "Businessmen's Putsch" in the US.
