British Civil War

Is there any way to set off an British Civil War or popular uprising any time after 1950? I am willing to accept any realistic POD with this, but i would perfer 1950-2000. When i say Civil War, i mean like a Russian Civil War or American Civil War, on that type of scale. But perferably no foreign intervention.

No their really isn't unless you go back to a POD long before that date.

What's that?

Hitler dies in the Beer Hall Putsch. No WW2, on the timeline of 1939-45 at least, British social and political stagnation. Without a UN, decolonization for Britain goes along the lines of Portugal's. Greater Xenophobia, Edward remains on the throne, the rise of National Socialism (Strasserism) and the reluctance of the armed forces to accept such a move, leads to a British Civil War.

Can you link me to the actual civil war part?

There was TL a ways back done by a Will Ritson that had a realistic 1984 premise with a British civil war in the 1950's.

After WW2, the British social structure was so built around unity, it is very hard to see a civil war breaking out. The only thing I could see is if say, France goes red, a far worse campaign by the IRA results in very strict curfew impositions and such and the people revolt. But even then, Im imagining more of a Carnation Revolution then anything else.

The government does something incredibly unpopular and the government refuses to back down?

Possibly, but think a far worse IRA terror campaign along with maybe some Scottish nationalist, Welsh nationalist, Communist local, you get the idea, terrorism to go with it. Riots like Brixton and then very unpopular government reactions.

One question, where are the weapons going to come from? If they come from, lets say, from Russia, that could backfire big time. That could lead to other groups fighting that group as well as the goverment. This of course will lead to a weakened rebels. And I can't see anyway a war happening in the first place.
BTW while wacthing the Arab Spring uprisings, a thought came to me, I only know one person with a pickup.:p
