All right, but there are more real life examples that break the rules. The original royal coat of arms of Virginia is a good example, a red cross on a blue field much like the one posted above.

Could you give me a reference? I tried googling and didn't find anything like you describe.
 
I doubt that the Kings of France-England would have a choice to avoid this.
I can't see many european nations wanting to pick a fight with France-England until the reformation comes about (if it does) then France-england will probably be catapulted into war and end up with a large bit of germany. which would surely mean that it gets a practical monopoly on colonisation of the new world with burgundy afraid of the potential consequences of an all out war with France-england.
