Britain votes to leave the EC in 1975.

What would have happened if Britain had voted to leave the Common Market, as the EU was then known, in the 1975 referendum? The question posed was "Do you think that the United Kingdom should stay in the European Community (the Common Market)?" with either a yes or no answer.

Would this have resulted in Parliamentary deadlock as has happened with the recent referendum? What effect would it have had on the political and economic future of Britain? What effect would have it had within Europe?

Given that the UK would have only been in for a few years and things were less “complex” for lack of a better word I don’t think there would be as much issue.

It would be interesting to see how Ireland and Denmark handled the UK leaving and if they would consider doing so. The resulting EEC/EU would be a different animal of course.
