Britain never claims the Falkland Islands

Did the islands really affect UK-Argentine relations until 1982? I don't think so, in which case butterflies make it hard to consider what would have happened then.

As for the islands themselves, they may well have become French- les Iles Malouines?

I think that there is a huge impact on UK politics in 1982. The tories are going to be in deep trouble.

On the other hand does this allow the dictatorship in Argentina to carry on - or would they have started some other international adventure with comparable consequences

So what happens to them and how are Anglo-Argentine relations affected?

Err...the Falkland Islands were first claimed by Britain in 1748 and this led to the Falklands Crisis between Britain and Spain in 1770, which nearly turned into a world war and also had a knockon effect on Anglo-Russian relations, therefore Russo-Prussian relations, therefore Prusso-Dutch relations...

The butterflies from this could easily avert or completely change the American Revolution, never mind anything after that. TTL probably has no Argentina, never mind a Tory government ruling Britain in 1982!

Even disregarding knock on effects there's quite a few direct effects earlier due to no falklands- the royal navy would operate quite differently in the south atlantic.

But is the POD in the early 18th century, as Thande says, or it just means no British take over of the Falkands in 1833?

Well, the Argentines were driven out by the Americans in 1831. Had the Americans claimed it, it could have resulted in a war between the US and UK, or the UK could have let the US have it...

I honestly never figured out why the Argentines are so obsessed about those Islands other than a matter of pride.

I'm thinking that the course of the sea war in WW1 after the battle of Coronel would be different. Where would the battlecruisers coal?
