Britain fights on but without Churchill

WI Britain continued to fight against Hitler but Churchill was not prime minister. I think this is possible.

I tend to think that the outcomes of this are likely to be good. It is true that Churchill gave brilliant speeches but other than the basic decision to fight on his interventions in military affairs tended to be bad.

I think that the conservatives are even more screwed in the post war election.

I think it very likely that Britain would have fought on without Churchill. If Chamberlain had remained healthy and been able to shift responsibility for Norway etc onto someone (Churchill?), he would have almost certainly fought on as he had given up on trusting Hitler. Halifax's intentions are less clear.

However, nobody except Churchill would have allowed Britain to become completely dependent on the US. Churchill had an American mother and an idea of the English Speaking Peoples. Chamberlain had bitter memories of negotiations over the WW1 debts. Thus with a Chamberlain government, there would be no Tizard Mission, possibly no destroyers for bases deal and probably Britain would have reduced the mobilization of its economy (perhaps stopping building bombers) to allow exports plus reserves to pay for imports over a long defensive war. There would probably be no agreement to cut off Japanese trade.

In terms of the war, I don't see an attack on the French Fleet. I also do not expect a transfer of troops from Libya to Greece. After Barbarossa, there would have been fewer Murmansk convoys. After 1941 my vision is blocked by butterflies. However, the Tube Alloys project in Canada might become the centre of British planning.

Depends who gets the job. If Eden was in the cabinet (PoD in 1939), he would be a likely candidate. Britain would fight on if anybody from the non-munich faction attained the premiership.
Highly unlikely Britain would send the troops she did OTL to Greece and this has significant butterflies.

HMS Vanguard also won't get laid down/continued without Churchill, so the British will have several Aircraft carriers ready earlier in the war, and more escort vessels when they are critically needed.
