Britain doesn't gain control of the asiento

Would the banning of slavery still have occurred? If so, when?

Crikey that's a tough one.

For one thing, the development of the British Empire in North America and the 13 colonies is probably somewhat retarded, with knock on effects in India. That could really affect how profitable slavery is seen and therefore how acceptable a cause banning it is among the rich.

It depends a lot on who has control of it I think.

I would think it would depend on HOW Britian don't get it.

If it's because "Britain don't have legally it, because no treaty of Utrecht", well...Britiain would have it de facto, by piracy (crushing spanish ships) and simple numerical advantage on sea.

If it's because "Britain is less powerful than OTL, and have a less important navy"...All the consequences depends on how much it's different from OTL, and when is the POD.
