Bristol Beaufighter carrier variant

I don't think you'd get a Wellington off Furious, but you might just manage the Hampden. Most likely the largest they'd try would be the Blenheim.

The thing with the Dolittle raiders is that the plane wasn't just a B-25 that was on the Hornet, they practiced for quite some time and had stripped the planes of any excess weight, it wasn't a normal B-25 by that point. Yes it could be done, but using the Beau as a conventional plane is probably asking too much (IE expecting regular landings and take offs etc rather than using them on a single throw away strike).

Also I don't believe the B25 could actually land on the carrier, just take off.

A B-25 actually did land on a aircraft carrier. The US Navy conducted tests aboard USS Shangri-La in November 1944. A B-25 was successfully launched and recovered. The B-25 was modified though.

I did muse on a similar question a long time ago, about the Blenheim on RN armoured deck carriers. My query being driven by 2 things: total aircraft numbers both on the ship itself and in the RN FAA overall. The second thing was the RN practice of carrier flying in a 'range' where only 1/4-1/3 of the air group can be launched at one time.

Given these limitations launching 8-12 of a beast like the Beaufighter is much better than an anemic pos like the swordfish.
