What if Leonid Brezhnev died of a unfortunate heart-attack in 1972? Who would be the next leader of the USSR? Yuri Andropov or Alexey Kosygin? Any consequences on the Cold War, the Sino-Soviet Split, anything? I'm planning to implement this in a timeline, but I need some info first.

Any thoughts?

let face it Leonid Brezhnev was in dat time very ill

there even was a rumor that Brezhnev had Stroke

les know is that in 1969 january 22
Viktor llyin try to assassinate Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev !

to Yuri Andropov
In 1973, he was promoted to full member of the Politburo.
so he will be elected General Secretary of the CPSU!

for next 12 years he will change the USSR

wat he dit as real General Secretary in 1982-83 ?

During 15 months in office, Andropov dismissed 18 ministers, 37 first secretaries of obkoms, kraikoms and Central Committees of Communist Parties of Soviet Republics; criminal cases on highest party and state officials were started. For the first time, the facts about economic stagnation and obstacles to scientific progress were made available to the public and criticised.

Andropov was for a Joint USA-USSR Peace Force durnig Yom-kipur War 1973
and more Soviet-U.S. nuclear arms control talks (SALT I to II)

but He also insisted on the invasion Aganistan to help the Communist there
