Brazilian throne restored in 1993

In 1993, during a referendum, Brazilian people were asked what type of regime they would prefer. What if they had chosen monarchy over republic?

Would this Constitutional Monarchy have an Executive King or a mere figure head? If the latter, then why bother? More importantly, who would be the king?

It would be a figurehead role, Congress would decide who would take the throne as the Braganca family is splitted up. The two possibilities are Joao Henrique or Luiz Gastao.

That's just.. pointless. Why pay a King's salary when all he's going to be is ceremonial. I don't mind monarchies, as long as they do something. I'd really like a monarchy is I were King. :D

In the case of having a puppet king appointed, I'm not sure how much of an effect that would have on Brazil, apart from giving their Legislator all the power.

I would say that monarchies could be cheaper than republics, so that is not a question. It's not farfetched as it may seem. According to some newspapers, the political class in Brazil was nervous about the electorate turning overwhelmingly monarchical. Of course, this did not happen, but was if it does? I wonder the consequences of this political transformation. In Brazil, do we still have Lula? I guess so, even I would predict an earlier Lula, as there is an interesting relationship between monarchies and socialist parties to power. And of course, the collateral effects in the world? Having Brazil adopting monarchy would be a referent for monarchical movements. For a start, in Central, Eastern and Southern Europe.

Well, the monarchy winning in 1993 would be almost ASB. The monarchists didn't receive support from any political party, basically because it was considered too outdated and strange to the system used in Brazil. Even a Parlamentarist Republic only had the support of PSDB, as all the important others (PMDB, PT, PFL and PTB) supported Presidentialism. Also, after having waited for 25 years to vote for president again after the military period the people wasn't really in the mood to have a non elected chief of state.

The actual votes that the Monarchy got in the plebiscite were fewer than the abstentions, or even the nules or blanks:

Republic: 49.2%
Monarchy: 7.5%
Blank: 9.8%
Nules: 7.8%
Abstention: 25.7%

Of course, this did not happen, but was if it does? I wonder the consequences of this political transformation. In Brazil, do we still have Lula? I guess so, even I would predict an earlier Lula, as there is an interesting relationship between monarchies and socialist parties to power.

I believe Lula wouldn't ever happen with a monarchy, basically because PT never got (and probably never will) a Parliamentary majority that would allow him to be Prime-Minister. Even if there would be a PM from PT they would need a coalition, and no other Party would accept Lula as the leader of it. We probably would have a succession of PMs from PMDB or other centrist party with no real political meaning.
