What if Napoleon III offered the title "Emperor of Mexico" to Amadeo I or Alfonso XII instead of Maximilian I? How would the world receive the idea of Napoleon III helping the House that was deposed in favor of him? (It would proabably be unpopular). Austria and Belgium, having no inclination to support one of Isabella II's sons, would distance themselves from France's little misadventure. I think the outcome would be close to OTL but, Amadeo I or Alfonso XII would be more resented because of the thought of Mexico being ruled by Spain again but also more liked because they have a little more a connection Mexico than Maximilian I did. It would likely accelerate the Glorious Revolution of 1868 deposing Isabella II because Spain would have sent more than an expeditionary force to back Amadeo I or Alfonso XII. If Amadeo I or Alfonso XII is executed by the Republicans, would that mean Estanislao Figueras becomes president of the Spanish Republic instantly following the Glorious Revolution or Francisco Serrano reigning longer? With Maximilian I still alive, would he succeed Franz Joseph rather than Karl I? I'm interested in if Isabella II wanted Mexico back so badly her sending reinforcements from Cuba.
