Bourboun Emperor of Mexico

What if Napoleon III offered the title "Emperor of Mexico" to Amadeo I or Alfonso XII instead of Maximilian I? How would the world receive the idea of Napoleon III helping the House that was deposed in favor of him? (It would proabably be unpopular). Austria and Belgium, having no inclination to support one of Isabella II's sons, would distance themselves from France's little misadventure. I think the outcome would be close to OTL but, Amadeo I or Alfonso XII would be more resented because of the thought of Mexico being ruled by Spain again but also more liked because they have a little more a connection Mexico than Maximilian I did. It would likely accelerate the Glorious Revolution of 1868 deposing Isabella II because Spain would have sent more than an expeditionary force to back Amadeo I or Alfonso XII. If Amadeo I or Alfonso XII is executed by the Republicans, would that mean Estanislao Figueras becomes president of the Spanish Republic instantly following the Glorious Revolution or Francisco Serrano reigning longer? With Maximilian I still alive, would he succeed Franz Joseph rather than Karl I? I'm interested in if Isabella II wanted Mexico back so badly her sending reinforcements from Cuba.

Amadeo I wasn't a Bourbon. He was a member of the House of Savoy. And he would never go to Mexico (he was only pushed into Spain by his father). And the outcome with a Bourbon probably wouldn't be any different than it was with Maximillian.

I would agree, wouldn't end well for the bourbon. By this point the bourbons had been gone for four decades, give or take, so out of the memory of all but the oldest citizens. I would posit that the only way you could have a bourbon emporer of Mexico is if the bourbons fled to Mexico (or sent one member to "oversee" during the Peninsular War. Kind of like what happened with Portugal and Brazil.

When deciding who should be the emperor of Mexico, Napoleon consciously ignored the Bourbons, to prevent Spain from having any influence in Mexico. The Spanish were unhappy with that, which is why Spain withdrew from the alliance that invaded Mexico.

Anyone other than Max is likely to call it quits when things go south and will probably survive, so there is that at any rate.

Max staying in Europe probably has a bigger impact than an alternate emperor.
