This thread is based on Michael Rohde's claim in ENDGAME SREBRENICA that, when the UN was 1st proposing the 'Safe Areas' resolution to protect Bosniak civilians from 'ethnic cleansing' in 1993, Iran actually offered to provide soldiers & armaments to defend the enclaves- incl Srebrenica. However, this Iranian offer was turned down by the UN on the grounds of Iran's Islamic fundamentalist & pro-Bosnian govt nature, meaning that OTL the 'Safe Areas' only had 7,600 ill-equipped UN peacekeepers to guard them- such as Dutchbat at Srebernica who in July 95 were unable to prevent the VRS overrunning them & massacring the 8,000 Bosniak men & boys inside0 instead of the 34,000 deemed as a minimum for UNPROFOR to make this concept work. However, WI the iranian offer had been aceepted, & there were Iranian soldiers defending Srebrenica & poss other Safe Areas too ?
btw- the UN claim that Iran was too religiously motivated is hypocritical IMHO, given that pro-Serb Russian & Ukrainian contingents were allowed to serve, without challenge, in UNPROFOR in places such as Grbavica, Gorazde & Zepa.
