Born in the Fire; The Story of the American Kingdom

Intro

The United Kingdom of America or as it is better known as the American Kingdom was an oddity when the Constitution was ratified. Indeed it was much mocked in Europe at the time in 1789. The nation that had fought against the idea of having a king as a sovereign decided that a monarchy was needed. However instead of going to the Germanies for a royal family the new nation decided that they would try something that had only been done in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth which was in decline and indeed in a few years would be removed from the face of the Earth with the third and final Partition of Poland in 1795. Many in Europe believed that it would only be a matter of time before the new American Kingdom would fall apart and be able to bring back under the control of Europe.

History has proven them wrong on many accounts. The American Kingdom not only survived but it thrived. By the end of the Second World War there was no mistaking that Pax Americana was here as there was no one left in a position to challenge the American Kingdom. Even American allies if they were to band together wouldn’t had been enough to challenge the American Kingdom. Even some 100 years later as the US nears its tricentennial no one nation can match the power of the United States. Via its military or its economic power the US is all but untouchable.

This is America’s story, Born In The Fire.

I hope the Adams end up as monarchs, although I'm guessing it'll be the Washington dynasty.

Eh

However instead of going to the Germanies for a royal family the new nation decided that they would try something that had only been done in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth

I'm guessing elective monarchy.

What dynasty? He has no children of his own, his stepchildren are all dead, and his only step-grandson would be a bit young by the time he dies. This means a Washington dynasty would be in the hands of either a young child with no direct blood relation to the man, or a brother no one has even heard of.

I present to you Ancestry magazine. An analysis of George Washington's nieces and nephews through his brothers and half-brothers if they were to become kings/queens.

Washington dyasty

For some reason i am sensing draconian King Hamilton.:p
Not even close. Hamilton will not be king ITL. Prime Minister, maybe. King no. '

Like I said over on The Ark, there is no basics for me to work with as nothing like this kind of government set up had ever been tried, even in any ITL I know of.

I was also half tempted to put this in pre-1900 but an American king is just so unlikely I decided that ASB would be better.

While skimming the titles of the threads, I somehow misread this as "The American Klingon", which would probably be a pretty interesting timeline, too. A monarchical United States is pretty unique too. But one question - why is it in ASB? It doesn't seem that weird.

I put this in ASB as an American Kingdom is just so unlikely that I don't see it happening in pre-1900.

The American Revolution Part One

By 1775 the American colonies had enough. The British had been trying to force taxes down the throat of the colonists. At first the British had tried to be fair and allow the colonist pass their own taxes to pay their share of the defensive of the Empire in 1764. However all that was heard from the colonists was crickets on the matter of taxes. With the colonists refusing to do the job the British Parliament decided to do it for the colonists in 1765. This started a downward spiral in relations between London in the colonies.

Then in 1773 came the Boston Tea Party in protest of British taxes. The colonist were of the opinion that parliament didn’t have the right to tax them without representation. The British were of the opinion that the colonists did have representation via the idea of virtual representation. This was the idea that even through there were no seats in parliament for the colonists the members of parliament acted in the best intentions for the whole of the British Empire in mind. Many colonists rejected this idea. Ever since 1765 it had been a back and fore between the colonies and London over the tax issue. Then came the Tea Act of 1773. The Tea Act would validate the Townshend Taxes which were hated through out the colonies. In many places East India Company ships were unable to make port to even try to sell their tea. However in Boston embattled Governor Thomas Hutchinson made sure that the EIC ships were able to dock.

Knowing if the EIC was able to sell the tea it would give parliament even more rights to tax the Sons of Liberty came up with a plan to make sure the EIC couldn’t sell their tea in Boston. Two nights after the small convoy of EIC ships had docked members of the SoL stormed the ships and threw the tea into Boston Harbor or outright stole it. The loses to the EIC stood at over 10,000 pounds or to put that in terms of the current value of the dollar it would been close to 1.9 million dollars in lost cargo.

With news of the Boston Tea Party London decided to show the colonists who were in charge of the colonies. What happened next became known as the Intolerable Acts. The port of Boston one of the busies ports in the world at the time was closed down. The locally elected Massachusetts government was disbanded. Martial Law was declared in Boston with Parliament naming General Thomas Gage as governor of Massachusetts. All people who took part in the Boston Tea Party were to be tried in London as those in London believe they could not get a fair trial in Boston or anywhere in the colonies. Then there was the Quartering Act which forced the people of colonies to support the billeting of British soldiers if no other means of housing them was at hand. Then finally there was the Quebec Act which awarded the whole of the Old Northwest to Quebec which had only been New France 11 years earlier. This was after years of forcing the colonies to stay east of the Appalachian Mountains.

The colonies were all very unnerved by the Intolerable Acts. Even through most believed that they had gone too far in Boston with their Tea Party the fact that the British had stripped away the Massachusetts Government meant that their governments could be taken away by British flat or whatever reason suited them. The shut down of Boston Harbor also had an effect of putting many out of work and as the old saying goes idle hands are the devil’s workshop. Many in the colonies blamed both King George the Third and British Parliament for these Intolerable Acts. As more and more people found themselves out of work or unable to work the mood became more and more hostile to the British.

In respond to the Intolerable Acts the colonies did something. They held their own national meeting on the matter. This was highly illegal. But the British allowed it to happen in the hopes that this meeting would talk some sense into Massachusetts and repay the EIC for the loss of their tea. The British misread the mood of their colonies. This was meeting became the First Continental Congress. Even through there wasn’t much they could agree on at the First Continental Congress they were able to agree an attack on any one of them was an attack on all of them.

Then came the shot that was heard around the world as it would change the world in ways no one saw coming.
