Book Enquiry - 1942 Sealion vs. Americans

Back in the seventies I read an AH novel -- even if it wasn't inteded -- where the Nazis invaded Britain in 1942 and the only troops available to resist them were American. The commanding officer of the U.S. troops was having an affair, I recall. There was a scene where one side was spraying poison gas over London.

Does anyone think this sounds familiar?

I own it,, its called "S-Day", author is James Stewart Thayer, copyright 1990,

It has some flaws (for one thing, the American divisions are square divisions), but its a pretty good read

The US commanding General is indeed having an affair with an English noblewoman, and it fits your description except for when you read it. Possibly it was reprinted?

Thanks. I’ll look for it.
