Bolsheviks keep the Russian flag

Is there any way the Bolsheviks could keep the Russian tricolor, instead of the red flag? In OTL, a few communist countries like Czechoslovakia,Cuba and Poland kept their pre-revolution flags

sure they could have .. but the point of the soviet union was to do vanquish the past.. forge a new union of peoples .. using the symbols of old didn't fit that idea

Just add the hammer and sickle and say we will make a good legacy

Plus keep thr tri color legitimizea the past . Brings credence to the whites.. Gives the past more staying power.

Sure other nations kept said flags . Ddr Germany with hammer and sickle . Czezkoslovakia and others . These were states that needed legitimizarion of the people making a choice after the war to be in the communist block. If the soviets made then all change their banners it wouldn't seem so honest Would it.

Soviets had a revolution after a revolution
Then a civil war. The tri color was the banner of the whites

The hammer and sickle was a relatively late addition. It wasn't in the 1918 RSFSR flag. The important thing is that the flag had to be red. It had been the symbol of socialism for decades. The Bolsheviks were known as the "Reds," their earliest military units as the "Red Guards" before the formation of the "Red Army." Bolshevik Russia had to have a flag distinct from the Imperial Russian flag--which after all was used not only by the discredited Tsarist and Provisional Governments but by the White armies. And that flag could only be red, whatever words or symbols were added to it.
