How about a HOI4 run using the Novum Vexillum mod as a fascist India? I'd to see the following:

  • Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, the Maldives and Myanmar annexed
  • Tibet, Afghanistan and the Southeast Asian states as puppets
  • China under a friendly fascist regime

The Yoke Restored

According to the exiles dev diary:

"As hinted in last week's DD we’ve also added a few more releasable countries that can become independent in a peace deal or through focuses. So basically all SSR’s, ASSR’s and some of the Okrugs of the USSR are covered, as well as some other countries that existed before the establishment of the Soviet Union in 1922."

So here's a challenge: Release Tatarstan at game start (using commands if necessary), play as them, and seize Russia as a puppet state, reestablishing the Tartar Yoke!

88. Bosnia - Communist
How about Communist Bosnia and Herzegovina in Millennium Dawn?
I really want to try the new No Step Back, so no mods for now

I’d like to see you use the Releasable States Fixed mod (you’ll probably have to roll back the game to an earlier version).

I’d like to see you release Galicia from Poland, and then puppet the whole of Europe without annexing a single inch of land.

Galicia isn't in the base game, and most mods are out of date due to the new expansion, so instead I combined with the above and tried to be a puppet-master starting from a small releasable country...

Starting as Yugoslavia, we recognized the Soviet Union and abolished the monarchy, making the country a communist ally of the Soviet Union and Communist Poland.
Once we were communist, Yugoslavia gave autonomy to the constituent republics of Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, Montenegro, Kosovo, and Macedonia. This was right around the time the Soviet union had a communist civil war to depose Stalin, putting the alliance in an awkward position. However, Trotsky was happy to re-affirm friendship between socialist countries, so all was solved...

Until Germany went on the warpath. Hungary had "stolen away" rightful German territory by re-forming the Austro-Hungarian kingdom, so Germany began its invasion of central Europe. Meanwhile, the baltics and finland had fascist rebellions, the Estonian fascist movement succeeded, and proceeded to invade and occupy the rest of the baltics, and then joined the Axis for the invasion of Poland.

The Invasion of Poland was the last straw. The Allies declared war on Germany, the Comintern (now 4th Internationale) also answered to protect fellow communists from fascist aggression. Romania, which had maintained its alliance with Poland out of fear of Hungary, also joined against the Nazis. Italy declared war on Greece, which turned communist and also joined the comintern.

However, the combined armies of Eastern Europe fell quickly before the might of the German attack. The Soviet Union, weakened by the civil war and without strong leadership, failed to mobilize enough of an army to protect their allies and themselves, and so was quickly overrun. The Balkans lasted little longer.

However, in the mountainous regions of the Balkans, remnants of the armies of Poland, Romania, Greece, and Yugoslavia continued brutal guerilla warfare, tying down hundreds of thousands of German troops. Particularly in Bosnia, where Sarajevo never fell, provided a base for the combined resistance armies. This huge thorn in the German's side delayed their advance into Western Europe, thus France survived the initial attack, and was able to fight the Germans to standstill in Belgium.

Unfortunately, the fascist Spanish regime, which had conquered Portugal, smelled blood in the water and invaded France from the south. France fell, along with most of the combined British and French armies, dealing a crushing blow. However, the Americans joined the war to fight the Japanese, and with the British launched a counter-invasion. Spain was the first Axis power to fall to the Allied counter-attack. Italy was next to be invaded, starting from Sicily the allies rolled up the soft underbelly of the Axis.

The Americans also attempted to land in Normandy, but with the Soviets agreeing to an armistice at the Ural mountains, the Germans had redeployed their army and destroyed multiple invasion attempts.

After two years of bloody stalemate, the Allies finally broke through the low countries liberated France, crossing the Rhine and even reaching the Elbe. The Bosnians and their various allies began a large assault, quickly liberating much south/eastern Europe. However, at the gates of Nuremburg they were turned back, having burned out all manpower and equipment. The Soviets re-joined the war but instead suffered a crushing defeat that pushed them out of Central Asia. The Japanese, who had just finished conquering South Asia, including all of India, turned north and invaded the Soviets, securing yet more territory. With the Allies concentrating on defeating Germany, Japan was able to establish naval dominance in the Pacific, even occupying Hawaii.

The Germans summoned the last of their strength for a final counter-attack. It succeeded in the east, and the Communist armies were forced to retreat all the way back to fortress bosnia, with the Germans retaking their old trenches facing Sarajevo. However, their efforts failed in the west, and allied finally took Berlin, and ended the Nazi rule.

Europe was liberated, with the countries given new democratic governments. Poland was merged with Czechoslovakia, since the Czechs were deemed too weak to stand on their own, while the Poles could not be trusted with complete independence, since their only surviving leadership were the communist exiles.

Although Europe is secured, Japan's position is just too strong to dislodge...

89. India - Fascist

The British Empire tried to restore the monarchy, however this lead to the independence of the Dominions and India. While the Dominions went democratic and aligned with the USA and France, India chose a path of extreme nationalism, forcefully uniting the subcontinent by fighting no less than two civil wars, and then many more smaller wars on the various neighboring lands who wanted to go their own way. Burma was the first, then followed by Bhutan, Nepal, Tibet, Siam, and Afghanistan.

India began creating a navy, to protect itself in case the British came back... and created a marine corps as well, since the British held Sri Lanka, which would have to be liberated soon...

But before that could happen, India would need allies for the fight against their former oppressors. At first, it was hoped the German Nazis would be a useful ally. Unfortunately, the Nazis ended up at war with France at the same time as the British ended up at war with the Commonwealth, which meant that the British joined the Nazis.

The British and Nazis swept through western Europe, and seemed unassailable. However, Japan and the USA joined the allies, and the hope was that the global coalition would break into Europe, allowing the Indians to quietly secure their claims in a peace conference. Unfortunately, the Japanese were losing in China, and the Americans lost Africa to the British and Italians. This embarrassing failure meant that the Soviet Union was India's last hope to finish the war in decisive manner.

However, the Soviet Union was pushed back. In the meantime, India invaded China and installed a friendly regime. Persia was neutralized, with azerbaijan joining Axis Turkey, but the rest being impassable to the Axis armies, who, after a two-year breather on the AA line before the Urals, finished off asian russia.

Although the Indian navy is able to control the Indian ocean, the Axis are far from defeated, and although the Americans have demonstrated the terrifying power of their nuclear weapons on English Newfoundland, the Allies lack the power projection to frighten the Axis in their own hemisphere.

The world is settling into a Cold War, with India caught in the middle.

90. Tartaria - Neutral/Monarchist
Another Idea for when No Step Back releases...

The Yoke Restored

So here's a challenge: Release Tatarstan at game start (using commands if necessary), play as them, and seize Russia as a puppet state, reestablishing the Tartar Yoke!

So technically the use of the word "Tartar" in Tartar Yoke actually refers to Mongolia, not modern tartaria. Tartars (also sometimes Tatars) are a turkic people who were some of the first to be subjugated by Ghengis Khan, later they migrated westwards, ending up with the exclaves of turkic minorities surrounded by trans-ural russian settlements.

But I was thinking of saving Mongolia for later, instead I really wanted to do one of the new releasable countries, so I went ahead and did Tartaristan anyway...

Starting with the Soviet Union completely dismantled, The Plan was as follows:
1. Turn communist. This is important for diplomacy reasons.
2. Take over immediate neighbors to unite the Ural countries. I can justify war quickly because I am no longer democratic. Russia doesn't mind because of same-ideology good relations. Also, taking over the newly independent countries is very juicy because all minor countries get free factories, but don't have pre-existing standing armies to resist.
3. Get permission to pass through Russian territory to get at even more of the post-soviet countries.
4. World tension is high enough that independence guarantees from democratic countries might become a problem. However, Britain turned communist and took over France, so the Western EU great powers are out. Germany went into Civil War to re-instate monarchy, so they're no longer a threat. USA is in fascist civil war boo-yeah! And Japan is in civil war. So nothing to worry about!
5. Keep invading countries, slowly taking over central Asia, Siberia, Caucasus, etc... Until Japan finishes their civil war and the new democratic government starts sending guarantees. But they're all the way over stuck fighting Manchuria, so Russia can guard the border in Siberia just fine.
6. Fascists and Imperialists defeat international communism in America, Africa, and Middle East, with last holdouts in China and British Isle, leaving me and USSR as final remaining communists.
7. Get surprise war declared on me by Germany and invaded by combined armies of Central Powers through undefended border with Poland.
8. Russia tries to rescue me but eventually Moscow falls and they capitulate.
9. Uhhh... Germany please have mercy. I promise to be your loyal friend. Just let me keep central Asia. If you don't you'll have to bleed for it!
10. Watch as german-puppet Russia has a civil war to install fascist regime over the tsarists. So that's why the Soviets didn't do anything! Apparently, Stalin was so paranoid and did so much purging that he accidentally/unintentionally blocked the tsarists/fascists from attempting a coup for years, which blocked their progression on the focus tree.
11. Watch Japan clean up East Asia.
12. Build up a fresh army with tons of tanks and mechanized infantry. Spies reveal Germany is still way stronger than me and I'd have to fight my way through all the Central Powers just to even get to them. Give up on hopes and dreams of asian dominance and just sit tight as an unwilling german minion.

So yeah due to a diplomatic mismanagement halfway through the game, this run kinda failed....

91. Russia - Neutral/Monarchist
Play as Tsarist Russia with No Step Back. (Could be ironic if the US somehow took the Communist path during gameplay, thus creating a reverse Cold War situation.)

The Russian exiles returned to Russia, setting up a secret base in Siberia, from where the anti-soviet counter-revolution would be organized. The second Russian Civil War started with the Whites having the advantage, due to all the cavalry units they recuited across Asia, along with the mass defectors who were tired of Stalin.

Germany, Japan, and the USA each had their own had civil wars. In Germany, the military dictatorship ousted the nazis and restored democracy. In Japan, the Military extremists purged the remaining anti-ultranationalists elements. In America, the neo-confederates were defeated and the country reformed into a socialist democracy, alongside France, Britain, and the rest of the commonwealth, who peacefully elected socialists (with some exeptions). These western socialists were interested not just in democracy, but also in decolonization. Conflict over decolonization in Africa and Asia eventually brought the socialists into open war with the remaining european colonial empires of the Dutch and Belgians, who received protection from Germany. Germany unified Europe into an anti-communist alliance.

Meanwhile, in Russia the Tsarists sidelined the fascists, but still used militarism to restore and then expand the borders of the old empire. First, Mongolia was annexed. This displeased China, but they were too weak to do anything but protest. While the Japanese were in civil war, the Russians also took Manchuria. In the west, the Russians annexed the baltic countries, and made demands to Finland, Romania, and the rest of the Slavic nations. Finland, Romania, Bulgaria, and Czechoslovakia, all protected by their alliance with Germany, declined. Poland and Yugoslavia however both happily joined the new Slavic Union.

Once Germany was distracted by the war against the communists, Russia broke their non-aggression pact to surprise invade Europe, officially to retake Finland and the remaineder of the Slavic Union. The invasion was swift and very successful, although casualties were very high as the Russians primarily relied on forcing waves of infantry forward in order to find weak spots in the front line which were then exploited by cavalry-mobile infantry, creating breakthroughs. Russia also created large formations of tanks to crush resistance in the regions were the fighting was most intense, such as the road the Berlin, then later the Caucuses-Don region, when Turkey joined the war and surprise invaded from the south. However, Volgograd was saved by a fresh army of tanks which battled the enemy armies to a standstill.

Eventually, the Germans were pushed back until they capitulated. The Russians made it to the Rhine, then turned back south east, folding up the lines of the Czechs, then Hungarians, then Romanians, then Italians. The Greece and Turkey proper were invaded and pacified by joint Anglo-American amphibious landings.

Back on the world stage. The socialists decolonization had freed much of the world, However India, suffering the humiliation of pakistan independence, had a nationalist revival, the resulting civil war crushed the pro-commonwealth socialists, and India began leaning towards Russia. Pakistan meanwhile ended up at war with the commonwealth and got a new anti-indian government. South Africa is now the last vestige of colonialism in the world, after Japan lost the war to the Americans and Russians.

An Iron curtain has falled over Europe. In the East, deeply religious and conservative Russia stands a bastion of monarchism and capitalism. In the West, progressive and anti-racist USA stands as a beacon of communism and republicanism. Which system will decide the fate of the world?

92. Komi - Communist
Completely dismantle the USSR at game start, play as Komi, turn fascist and help Germany win WWII, but then backstab them and take ALL the glory!

To be different from the recent Tartaria run, I decolonized/dismantled the whole world. Also I went communist instead of fascist for the same reason as the previous tartaria run, but this time luck was on my side!

Komi quickly invaded and integrated its polar neighbors on both sides of the Urals, accomplishing this by using cavalry-mobile units to outrun basic infantry in the low-supply areas. However there still wasn't enough of an industrial base to take on Russia. Luckily, Russia went into civil war as the whites revolted against Stalin.

Stalin successfully inflicted grievous casualties on the white army, stopping them at the Ural line, which was good because while the whites temporarily outnumbered the red army and siphoned much of their strength with deserters switching sides, most of the industry was still in the west where Stalin kept firm control. Eventually, Stalin's army pushed back, draining both sides. Once the White army was depleted, Komi invaded from northern siberia in a lightening strike to capture as much territory as possible. Stalin couldn't complain much when Komi promised to join him soon as an ally.

Instead, Komi prepared to do their own overthrow of Stalin. Komi had serious issues with manpower, but not enough research capabilities to implement tanks. So instead Komi built up an impressive air force and motorized and mechanized equipment to make the previous infantry as efficient as possible in both speed and armor.

by forcing mass conscription on the entire male population, while the entire female population was put to work on production, Komi was able to mobilize enough divisions for two full field armies for the invasion of Russia. However, since the supply situation had only partially been solved, the border had to be elongated. More frontage meant units could be more spread out, alleviated supply burden while also allowing Komi to seize more territory in the initial surprise phase of the plan.

So Kazakhstan was chosen as the final target to go after before invading Russia. Unfortunately, Kazakhstan had more manpower than Komi, and their industry, while smaller, still was enough to equip a field army of their own for the defense of their country. Even worse, Komi could only invade Kazakhstan through a narrow shared border on the north-east, where Kazakhstan bordered Siberia. The invasion that was meant to be a surprise quickly got bogged down by the entrenched defending infantry. After a hundred thousands losses on both sides, Komi pulled back and allowed Kazak units to invade Siberia, only to then rush the mechanized units forward, trapping the divisions on the wrong side of the Altai mountains. This destroyed a few formations, but Komi had to repeat bold moves such as this twice more before the encirclements had reduced Kazakhstan's army to the point where Komi could push directly against the front line again. Another hundred thousand casualties were suffered implementing these attacks to destroy half a million Kazaks, and then another hundred thousand overrunning Kazakhstan and occupying it.

Although the Komi military had been bled white, and had no reserves for the fight against the Russians, another lucky break came through. Germany declared war on Russia. Luckily, Belarus, Ukraine, and Karelia were neutral, so the fighting took place only in Lapland where Russia bordered Finland, and the small space where Russia bordered Poland and Latvia through Estonia. The Russian armies did not guard their rear as they raced forward to fight in the Baltics.

Komi initiated the surprise invasion. The Germans, thanks to theirs and Italian naval superiority, took the Don and Leningrad through amphibious landing, but Komi took Stalingrad almost unopposed, then raced to Moscow. I a few short weeks, Russia was forced to capitulate. Komi mopped up the remaining land that rightfully belonged to the USSR in central and north-east Asia.

In the rest of the world, the war is not over. Japan maintains its grip on Asia, while the USA have overthrown anti-democracy regimes in latin america. France and the Balkan Federation resist their occupations.

hoi4-kom1-1946.png

93. Ethiopia - Communist
The Italian invasion of Ethiopia was a horrible embarrassment for the wanna-be empire of Mussolini. Although the Italians had all the advantages in manpower, firepower, organization, technology, and even logistics, the Ethiopians had a trick up their sleeve. They knew their land well, and every mountain ridge and valley was optimally prepared by commanders who quickly became expert defenders. The absolute monarchy of Selassie use its great political control to fine tune Ethiopian society for total war to defend the country.

While this succeeded at buying enough time for weapons imports and production to ramp up enough to match the Italians in the field, the mass mobilization of the people, in both the military and workforce, and especially women, had a great impact on society that would change many things very quickly...

On the field of battle, the Ethiopian troops managed to push around the Italians, using mountaineer specialists to capture the ports that the Italian supplies relied on. Without those, the Italian armies were quickly forced to surrender and the war was over.

However, Ethiopia did not demobilize. Instead, a popular revolution overthrew the monarchy. The new republic was quickly influenced by the most radical communist factions who sought liberation not just for themselves and the Horn of Africa, but all of Africa.

Luckily, the global diplomatic situation favored rapid expansion. The British were in crisis as the empire lost all legitimacy over the new king, isolating it from potential allies. So Ethiopia struck hard and fast. Newly recruited cavalry formations raced across Africa, bridging the Cape-to-Cairo line. South Africa remained neutral, and Egypt could not be immediately captured because the British army managed to mobilize and bring enough force to stop any advance along the Nile. So Ethiopia produced a feint, retreated across Sudan, but then cut along the coast of the Red Sea, and captured rail junctions at points along the Nile, trapping most of the British army in Africa, and forcing their surrender.

However, things were not over. The British attempted to extend their influence in China, using the civil war in Japan as an opportunity to support Manchuria. However, Manchuria ended up at war with the Chinese communists. This put the Soviet Union on the war path against the British. The French, who were on the verge of civil war between royalists and communists, choose a monarchist government, which prompted revolts, which counter-prompted France to join Britain in their mutual anti-communist struggle. This put France's extensive African colonies at war with Ethiopia, which Ethiopia was perfectly in a situation to exploit! Ethiopia also carefully diplomatically maneuvered to have Germany focus on defending northern and eastern Europe, abandoning Belgium, which in turn was forced into the arms of the British when Ethiopia came along to liberate the Belgian-occupied Congo.
Unfortunately for Ethiopia, the total lack of infrastructure meant that any advances west past Kenya were impossible until time had been spent constructing railroads and trains, so the French and Belgians were able to place troops in time to fortify the border against attack.

Germany had invaded Italy to impose democracy, and continued to protect european democracy. When the Soviet Union demanded Polish territory, the Germans appeased them. Again in Romania, appeasement held the Soviets back. With these concessions, cataclysmic war in Europe was averted. When the British interfered with the USA by attempting to take over Canada and Australia, Germany, and the various European democracies, joined the Allies.

Britain managed to get Portugal as an ally, but Portugal quickly capitulated to the soviet-aligned Spanish republic, which also helped liberate France. Together, they formed an Iberian-French West European Commune. This left Britain alone at war with the rest of the world, with the notable exception of nationalist China, which remained neutral.

Ethiopian armies eventually built up enough supplies to sweep across enemy territories in Africa, even capturing some of the Middle East, also disposing of the corrupt government of Liberia.

With this final act, Ethiopia negotiates to purchase the formerly Spanish colonies in Africa, which the Iberians are happy to oblige to help end the legacy of colonialism.

94. United Kingdom - Neutral/Monarchist + Japan - Neutral/Monarchist
What do they know of love? The British King's marriage to an American commoner, sparks a scandal. In the fallout, with the Monarchy refusing to back down, parliament resigns and in the ensuing chaos the overseas dominions filibuster their participation in the British Empire. However, most colonies are forced to remain loyal.
First, the British ensure the loyalty of India, granting large reforms in the colonial administration, doing away with the princely states and instead moving towards an autonomous nation. However, the muslim minority are not happy, afraid of being sidelined by a Hindu majority. When a two-state solution is proposed, it is declined by the British authorities, and so the Indian Civil War begins. Even through the rebellion was relatively brief, many tens of thousands Indians perished in the domestic sectarian violence. However, order was mostly restored and so Indian remained united as a British colony.

In order to re-assert the King's authority over the wayward commonwealth states, the King decided to embark on a path of imperialistic militarism. The secret service agency was greatly expanded and used to infiltrate the government of Canada, preparing a base of loyalists who would collaborate in the conflicts to come. After sufficient preparations, a coup was launched, and an invasion simultaneously as well from Newfoundland. Quickly, Canada was captured as elite tanks units quickly outmaneuvered the border guards and ran straight to Toronto and Montreal. With the collapse of Canadian resistance, Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand all gave in to British demands. Ireland was also re-incorporated after a short war.

Meanwhile, Japan's government succumbed to a coup by the militarists who dismantled democratic institutions to return to the absolute monarchy of the emperor. The Armed forces were re-organized and prepared for the eventual takeover of China. However, it was discovered that the authorities in Manchuria planned to use Puyi as a figurehead to stage their own contest in the struggle for control of China. This would be inconvenient for Japan's plans, so the farce of Manchurian independence was ended and the state was annexed as a settler colony for the Japanese nation.

Being both Monarchies, and both having extreme imperialist ambitions, Japan and the United Kingdom had secret negotiations to enter into alliance. The target: America. Now that the British Empire was establishing new heights for its glory, the new goal was to unite the Anglophone countries and use them as a base to dominate the world. For Japan, the USA held vital territories in Asia. Together, they cooperated to prepare the greatest surprise invasion in all of history.

The British mobilized forced from their various colonies around the world to fill the Canadian-American border west of the Great Lakes, while in the east the English divisions were equipped with tanks and trucks to make a mad dash to capture the concentrated population and industry centers to prevent organized resistance. In Asia, Japan would launch naval invasion to capture the Philippines.

The plan went off without a hitch, and went even better than initial expectations. The British interventions in colonies around the world, paired with the growing threats of the Nazis in Europe and Japan in Asia meant that American politicians had pushed for re-armament. However it seems they had got their industry prepared for war without actually mobilizing their manpower into a large standing army.
The result was the painless capture of a heavy industrial base ready to contribute the armament of British forces in the near future. After exactly 155 years of independence, the republic was snuffed out and British monarchism returned. At first, the was some sporadic resistance that threatened to impose costs on the new administration, but with the arrival of the Queen and the inclusion of white Americans into the privileged top of the imperial racial hierarchy, disobedience was quickly abandoned by the vast majority of the population as the Empire offered new economic opportunities that turned the Great Depression around, also the celebrity status of the Queen helped the propagandists re-shape American culture into being loyalist. For the parts of the empire that were primarily English-speaking plus India, Britain invited to the Imperial Conference, where an Imperial Federation was proposed. This resolution was accepted, resulting in the full integration of the Empire as not a series of dominions held together by commonwealth, but rather as a singular nation.

As for Japan, with the colonization of the Philippines and the intervention of the USA ruled out, the invasion of China could now begin. Invasion forced immediately captured all ports along the coast, with a brutal battle being fought on the shores and docks of Shanghai, where the largest invasion force landed. From there, they drove straight to Nanjing and captured it. along the coastal areas, Japanese agents had already set up collaborators, so the army was able to quickly set up an effective occupation government, allowing it to more effectively push into the interior while maintaining supply routes. The Chinese army was shattered under the superior firepower of tanks, artillery, and aircraft that the Japanese had brought with them. The average battle had a 10-to-1 kill ration in favor of Japan, with some sections of the front reaching averages of better than 20-to-1 as Chinese units were outmaneuvered, encircled, and entirely wiped out.

The Chinese communists, who had allied with French, did not directly intervene, but did create vast resistance networks to infiltrate and sabotage Japan, and would the main thorn in the side of Japan. Japan could not just continue the invasion of China, because this would draw Japan into a world war with the European powers and the Soviet Union, which Japan wanted to avoid. So they simply had to waste their time cracking down on resistors in-place without addressing the source of the issue.

In Europe, The Germans bullied their neighbors for territories, but eventually the Yugoslavians called their bluff. In response, Germany invaded the country. The Kingdom of Romania was attempting to secure its influence in Europe to guard it against both fascists and communists, so came to the defense of Yugoslavia. The Czechs and Poles joined the Romanian alliance to fend off the Nazi menace. Germany, still hoping to use intimidation to isolate its enemies only provoked stronger resistance as the Lithanians, Greeks, and Turks joined to end the aggression. Portugal attempted a surprise invasion of Spain but was defeated. Hungary tried the same to the Czechs but was defeated.

Germany was much stronger than the defending countries on an individual basis, but its diplomatic flops had created too many enemies to deal with simultaneously. So Italy was recruited. By promising huge territorial gains, the vainglorious Mussolini was manipulated into joining the war. It might have been enough to turn the tide in favor of the Nazis...

Knowing that having peaceful democratic neighbors would ultimately be better than having dangerous Nazis or Soviets competing over control Europe, Britain decided to help the democracies. When word came in that Hitler was preparing to invade the low countries, the time to act was now. Britain would invade the low countries first, and then from there launch a lightening invasion into Germany before they could mobilize enough forces to counter the unexpected thrust. Also, those juicy belgian and dutch colonies were a nice side bonus!

The invasion was a complete success. The Dutch had built their defenses expecting enemies to come from the east by land, not by the sea from west. The new British tanks, that were built to be both heavily armored yet fast with powerful engines, were quickly placed on the Dutch-German border and the invasion started. It took the Nazis by surprise to badly, that once the initial response was swept aside at Hamburg, the British tank armies drove unopposed to Berlin. After that, the Nazi armies fell back to establish a strong defensive position in southern Germany, but the British were able to pierce the line before strong entrenchments could be built, and were able to drive to Munich and Vienna. With the Italian army surrounded and captured in the Alps and Yugoslavia, Italy overthrew the fascist government and asked for terms. The Italians still retained enough diplomatic independence to force the Greeks to join the Imperial bloc, though the British did sweeten the deal by delivering Italian-occupied Dodecanese islands and the promise of a referendum on Cyprus.

With the war over, most democracies left the Romanian alliance, except for Poland and Yugoslavia, and Romania's puppets in Hungary and Bulgaria. Much of European democracies now align more with Republican Spain. The Soviet Union had remained very quiet after their brief civil war that saw the deposition of Stalin in favor of a more "liberal" government that gave more thought to peaceful development and expanded rights for the constituent soviet republics. With peace in Europe, the Japanese busy digesting China, the Imperial Federation stands astride the world.

95. Italy - Communist
Another MP run. This one was a "friendly" competition to see who could get the bigger conquest, Italy or Greece.

At first, Italy starts with an advantage, since it is easy to create justifications for war on Yugoslavia. Romania guarantees the independence of Yugoslavia, so it is possible to annex both countries one right after the other on a single war justification. Albania can be annexed for free using the national focus tree. Since Germany was focusing on economic development, they hadn't pushed the Munich conference, so Czechoslovakia remained free, and Hungary had not yet joined the Axis despite turning fascist. This was a wonderful opportunity to take over Hungary while they lacked German protection.

Meanwhile, Greece had only taken over Bulgaria and attempted to invade Turkey, but Turkey joined the Chinese United Front, which dragged Greece into the Japanese alliance, which put Greece at war with the Allies. Greece captured Egypt and the levant, but missed Persia and Iraq to the Soviets who got there first.

The Germans invaded Poland and failed to capture much territory in the first week, putting them in a disadvantageous position. The Soviets also declared war on Poland, putting them both at war with the Allies. Italy used this moment to declare war on Hungary hoping they Hungarians wouldn't call the Germans. However Italian luck had run out and Hungary joined the Axis. However, most of the German army was over guarding the Polish and French borders, so the Italian advance was not hindered until after the capture of Vienna. Italy considered joining the Commintern in order to have Soviet help against Germany, but decided against being trapped in a three-front war against the Allies. So Italy had to take on Germany alone.

In order to prepare for the war, Italy had created an army of light tanks that were heavily armored, but remained very mobile thanks to cutting-edge engine technological upgrades and production investment. However in the mountains of Austria and the Carpathians, this armor was of little value, and so had to be held in reserve while the infantry tried to take as much ground as possible before the German counter-attack. And counter-attack they did. With Poland capitulated and the western front stable on the Rhine, the Germans threw their full weight at pushing the Italians out of Austria and the Pannonian basin.

After a brutal grind, Italy was able to hold the defensive line along the Danube in the north and Carpathians in the east, keeping the precious Romanian oilfields out of German hands.

After a few months of waiting in their entrenched positions, the Italian armies got their equipment and manpower deliveries that would put their firepower on par with the Germans. The main difference between Italy and Germany was that Germany was hemorrhaging as much equipment as it could produce, while Italy had not only strong production, but could tightly control the pace of operations on their single front in order to avoid deficits from attrition.

Using the combined firepower of their tanks and new artillery packages, the Italians would alternate between weeks of intensive assault followed by digging in and waiting for additional supplies. This bit-and-hold advance slowly pushed the Germans back. Eventually, Italy reached the tipping point where German losses exceeded the speed at which they could replenish, so Italy ordered non-stop relentless assault to finish them off. The tanks charged forward, and in eastern Hungary encircled a huge portion of the German army, forcing their surrender. The Italians marched to Munich unopposed, liberated Prague and then marched into central Germany.

The aim of this forced march was to capture German territory behind the Rhine lines, so that the Allies wouldn't be able to take any German territory for themselves. This endeavor mostly succeeded, though a brutish amphibious landing captured Hamburg. The Italians surrounded Hamburg, trapping the British, allowing the Italians the honor of being the ones to take Berlin.

However, the Greeks decided to do a little trolling by flipping their government to fascism and justifying war goals on Italy. This was probably due to the dissatisfaction of the Greeks at having failed to take over more territory than Italy while being stuck at war with world powers it could not hope to defeat, unlike Italy who lofted from victory to victory without great peril to its homeland. In response, Italy had to take off large sections of its field army to redeploy to the Greek border. This gave the Germans some breathing room, causing the battle for berlin to become an even-matched slugfest as the desperate defenders stalled against the tide. However, the Italians did keep their tank army in the theatre, and eventually Berlin was surrounded and defeated. Germany capitulated and the Italian army re-deployed to Greece to face the final showdown.

It turned out that the Greek bluster had been a bluff. Upon inspection, it turned out that the Greeks had an army that was at least three times smaller, with a paltry military industry as well. The Italians punished the Greeks by counter-invading them, quickly overrunning their defenses in the Greek homeland, and then capturing anatolia. From there, Italy drove down the levant, capturing Egypt as well to protect their African colonies. In order to unify southern Europe, Italy also invaded Iberia, which was ruled by militarists that the democratic west wouldn't soon miss. As for Switzerland, well that was just the price to pay for help in fighting fascism around the globe.

As for the rest of the world, Japan has stalled out in China, and though it has defended its colonial conquests against the naval power of the Allies, the American navy is outpacing the Japanese navy, and a major breakthrough is sure to come any time now.
With the capitulation of Finland, the Soviets and Allies are now in a Cold War, where neither is in a position to attack the other.
Italy, now styling itself as the Union of Southern European Communes, being on good terms with both sides, proposes to mediate an armistice.

96. Mexico - Communist
Are y'all ready... for some chaos?

Mexico invited Trotsky from his exile to become the leader of the Mexican Revolution. It was incredibly successful, with Trotsky's genius military reforms allowing Mexico to quickly take over all of Latin America, while his subversive and diplomatic genius isolated the USA from intervening in the wars both within the American hemisphere and Europe.

In Europe, the Germans fought a civil war against the Nazis, and allied with Hungary to recreate the German and Austro-Hungarian Empires. This left Italy as the only European fascist power. Without updating their worldview, Mussolini vaingloriously attempted to invade Yugoslavia by himself. France and the UK joined the war, smashing Italy quickly and installing a pro-western government.

Spain was in civil war, with the anarchists defeating the communists and republicans defeating the nationalists, which left the republicans fighting off the anarchists. At first, the anarchists had the upper hand, but when Portuguese communists tried to revolt with Anarchist support, Portugal put down the rebellion and joined the Spanish war on the Republican's side, which turned the tide.

The Soviet Union had a civil war to depose Stalin, leaving it weak. This allowed to Allies to feel confident standing up to its territorial demands. When the Soviets attempted to invade Poland and the Baltics, the Allies declared war. The British secured regions of strategic interest by quickly invading Iraq, Iran, and Netherlands to ensure friendly governments. Germany also tried to Invade Poland, helping the Soviet Union fight the Allies. The US gave much support to the Allies. This created an opportunity for Mexico.

Having united Latin America and demanded the liberation of the Caribbean colonies which was refused, Mexico attempted to invade the USA. Mexico employed large amounts of motorized divisions to quickly capture as much American territory as possible before they could properly mobilize for war. However, America joined the Allies, and British and French army units quickly arrived to shore up the lines and counter-attack with naval landings, distracting parts of the Mexican army which was forced to defend its homeland.
Although Revolutionary forces penetrated deep into America, from Idaho to Missouri, the Americans surprisingly put together a powerful counter-attack through the West Coast and Gulf Coast, re-capturing California and Texas, advancing into Mexico, trapping most of the Mexican army on the wrong side of the Sonora desert. With Mexican forces surrendering, Mexico asked for a ceasefire. All territory north of the Panama canal would be turned over to American occupation, the army be demilitarized, and huge indemnities would be payed to America as reparations. Mexico was forced to turn over all of its war equipment as well. This crippled to Mexican economy and took them out of active participation in the war.

Meanwhile, Japan conquered China and continued onwards through the Soviet Union as well as southward, invading the European colonies. However, at this moment, many fascist movements in Europe had been gaining traction. France had a civil war, with the fascists joining Japan, establishing their base in Indochina, and invading India, which could not defend itself due to its own communist civil war.

The French betrayal of the Allies threw Europe into chaos. Germany had been invaded and capitulated by the democratic French and British forces, but with the French withdrawal of troops for the civil war, Austria-Hungary liberated Germany while Allies armies continued to march through the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union capitulated, allowing the Allies enough breathing room to push the Austro-Hungarians back.

However, the British and Irish fascists launched their own attempted coups. The British Isles quickly fell, meaning the USA took over global leadership of the Allies in managing the far-flung territories and colonies.

The US Navy defeated the Japanese, completely destroying the Japanese homeland with blockade, bombing, and later occupation. However, the mainland empire in China was still powerful, holding the Ural line and successfully advancing in India. However, the Manchurian monarchy revolted, attempted to take over leadership over the empire in China.

In 1944, Mexico had strained its economy to pay off enough war indemnities to buy back the occupation of the Caribbean islands. However, this was a trick because the Mexicans had secretly developed missile technology and nuclear technology. Having Cuba, Mexico set up ballistic nuclear missile sites and in late 1945 with the world war quieting down, used them to threaten the American mainland if they didn't end the occupation of the rest of Mexican territory. Instead, the Americans embargoed Revolutionary Mexico and set up their own anti-communist Catholic Mexico to govern central America.

America is the undisputed ruler of the world, with some isolated hold-outs continuing resistance. Tense but peaceful resistance exists in the Balkans and Americas, while the British and Irish are suffering a blockade, while the South Africans and Chinese/Japanese are fighting open border wars with the outside at same time as fighting civil wars against each other on the inside.

97. Lithuania - Neutral/Monarchist
With this, I've done every country that has a unique national focus tree, except minors with shared focuses like the rest of the baltics and chinese warlords.

Lithuania crowns a king, and desires reunification with the Polish monarchy. The problem is that the Poles aren't exactly enthusiastic about monarchy, instead in favor of a nationalist democracy.

Lithuania must reunite the crowns by force, but lacks the strength to conquer Poland, so first Lithuania reforms Livonia and integrates the Baltic countries, multiplying their manpower and industry. Then, using sophisticated propaganda, the monarchy is legitimized in Poland, and a royalist coup forces Poland into the grasp of Lithuania.

Poland-Lithuania is now reformed, however it's territorial ambitions have not yet been met. The Prussians have not been subjugated and the Russians pose a significant threat.

Luckily, the Russians fall into a second civil war, with Trostkyites deposing Stalin. The British intervene in Europe against fascist regimes in France, Netherlands, and Belgium. Germany, having rebelled against their own fascist regime, assembles the European democracies to stand against the Soviets. Poland-Lithuania asks the Germans to join in the crusade, which is accepted. The resulting invasion in swift, and Germany, no longer facing any threats, allows many European countries to join the Allies, who are now at war with the growing communist menace in the Americas, with the American civil war and Mexican invasion of the Caribbean.

Japan's civil war finishes with the democratic faction on top, but to win they had to sell their souls to the Soviets, who crushed the fascists in Manchuria, then, Korea, and finally in Japan itself.

The Soviets and Americans join together to fight the British-lead capitalist democracies and ex-colonies. Also, the British attempt to intervene in Iran, but with so much fighting everywhere else in the world, Iran gains a local advantage and thus a favorable peace.

Meanwhile, Poland-Lithuania invades Germany to secure Pomerania and Silesia. The PLC also finds itself at war with some of the Allies because of trying to take the river borders of Romania. However the British and Nordics do not join the war, maintaining peace due to the good business relations Lithuania was careful to develop the previous years. The PLC overruns central Europe and the Middle East, creating Polish Israel where Eastern European Jews are sent to colonize.

With the capitulation of Germany, Soviet/American-backed Iberia takes over Latin Europe for communism.

98. Spain - Fascist
Could you do a Spanish Directory game?
NatPop Carles rampage in Kaiserreich next

I haven't done any mods lately, since I wanted to focus on the vanilla with latest expansion. So this one is a combo twist: I wanted to do Carlist Spain path, but also used fascist ideology instead of monarchist.

The result: Nationalists forces fight the Civil War to crown the Bourbon king, but instead of being an absolute monarch, most power is retained by the prime minister who remains a dictator. Portugal also fights a civil war to reinstate the monarchy, also establishing the Empire of Brazil.

Spain takes advantage of this and proposes the Iberian Union, where the crowns of Spain and Portugal-Brazil join. France would have been invited too, only as the monarchists gained support, there was a counter-reactionary revolution spearheaded by the socialists, whose rebellion managed to take control of France. This distanced France from the Allies enough that when Spain invaded to "liberate" France, there was no international objection.
The French monarchists supported the Legitimist king as their own native monarch, thus the third crown of France was added to the Union.

Next up was to integrate the rest of the hispanophone world. With the USA in a civil war, the theory was that this endeavor would be easy. Others had the same idea. With the Americans weakened, Mexico had become aggressive and together with Venezuela and Peru attempted to invade the USA along with the central American minor nations.

Spain temporarily allied with Mexico and the British, who along with Germany found themselves at war with the Communists in both Russia and America. While the British distracted most of the American army in Canada, and the Mexicans taking on the rest on their border, the new Spanish Marine arm launched an unopposed invasion of America, walking from Florida to Washington DC. Spain also used Brazil as a base from which to launch invasions of the South American and Caribbean countries.

When the USA surrendered, Canada was given the eastern half of the country, and the western half was split into two puppet states, Cascadia and the Confederacy. Texas and New Mexico were promised to Mexico if Mexico became a Spanish subject. They refused, so Spain invaded their former allies in Latin America. Since they were fascists, no one else in the world complained, except the Italians.

However, the Italians were weak enough that a German coup prevented them from intervening. They wanted the Italians in their own alliance for their next war, now that the invasion of the USSR had slowed down at the Ural line. The Germans and Japanese declared war on the British. The Germans and Austria-Hungary wanted to take over Poland, Romania, and the parts of Russia that the British had captured. The Japanese wanted to take over the South Asian Colonies, since China and Siberia were not enough for them.

While the British maintained enough naval dominance to keep the Germans locked in Europe, they lost Scandinavia and their eastern European allies, and lost disastrously to the Japanese. Spain had built up a massive armada and used it to leverage threats against both the British and Germans. Spain invaded Italy, but Germany did not intervene to save their ally, hoping to keep powerful Spanish armies friendly instead of hostile during their war against the Allies. Once that was done, a brief limited border conflict in Canada took place, after which the British gave in to Spanish demands, handing over Gibraltar, Quebec, and Belize in exchange for continued peace.

99. Japan - Communist + United Kingdom - Communist
The path to revolution starts with a few small steps.

Japan, controlled by the army run amok in domestic politics, increases its investment in Manchuria to develop the country. This economic influence re-aligns the Manchu monarchy towards the civil authorities in Tokyo instead of the Kwangtung Army. Having secured local loyalty, Japan recalls the army and purges its leaders, regaining control over the officer corps. This move proves extremely popular with democracy-minded reformists. Over time, leftist pro-labor movements would take over Japanese democracy from the inside as the reform movement grew stronger. As Japan liberalized away from the imperialist factions, the colonies were integrated more closely, aiming for full equal citizenship. When the Manchu monarchy proved to be ineffective and unpopular with its subjects, Japan annexed it, and extended the colonial rights and investment that bought the loyalty of Korea.

Meanwhile in Europe, the British and French intervened the in the Spanish Civil War. The Republicans had defeated the falangists, but the anarchist uprising threatened to throw the whole region in upheaval. Portugal was also pressed into the intervention, and the anarchists were defeated. Spain remained a democracy, but with very large communist influence...
However Stalinists were unable to press their advantage since Stalin was deposed at home in a civil war in Russia. Red volunteer brigades from around the world joined the cause to restore the Soviet Union to pre-Stalinist democratic glory. Most notably, nearly 100,000 Japanese "volunteers" aided in the fight with state encouragement, and in exchange, the Soviets allowed Japan to administer Sakhalin Island.

With Germany having disposed of Hitler and the Nazis in their own civil war, they petitioned Britain to Join the Allies alongside the other western democracies. Britain accepted, and used the opportunity to crush Italian fascism. Japan ended up in a surprise war with China when Chiang Kai-Shek invaded the various warlords, including communist china, which had been building an alliance with Japan after Mao got assassinated. Japan helped Communist China prevail, and in exchange for revoking their claims on Japanese-held territory that used to be part of China, the PRC was formed.

For it's part, the USA was stuck in the middle of a civil war, with the democratic side fighting a fascist takeover. Also, each side was allied with a parallel side in the Mexican civil war between liberals and fascists. It was time to exploit the alliance with Germany and France to unite the Anglosphere. The colonies all agreed to an Imperial Federation, and with their integration, Britain began posting armies in Canada to capture the USA. Since Italy had still not capitulated, Germany and France could not abandon the alliance even if Britain flipped their government to communism and invaded a democratic power. So the labor movement used their electoral wins to completely topple the government by surprise, using the leftover imperial administration to instantly turn a fourth of the world into a people's commonwealth.

The invasion of the USA went smoothly, since most american armies were too busy fighting each other. Japan joined in to snag the philippines, hawaii, and siam.

With the wars over, The British, Soviets, and Japanese formed with 4th internationale together.
In order to secure Europe against communism, Germany invaded Poland, since Eastern and Southern Europe had formed a Falangist internationale that did not want to cooperate with western democracy and instead sought to stake out their own sphere. The Soviets jumped on the opportunity and so the remainder of neutral Europe was divided, with those that remained at peace joining France and Germany.

After some minor pro-fascists rebellions in the Netherlands and England, the new Franco-German European Union is the bastion of liberty in Europe. The Internationale attempted to leverage the high degree of electoral support for socialists parties in France and Germany to flip their governments, by sponsored coup/civil war if necessary, but their electoral democracy proved too stable, and their domestic spy agencies too strong, so this subversion was resisted.
