Blood, Guts and Politics

Very interesting so far. I do wonder what the future of civil rights is ITTL, although right now (as we're in 1948) it's not a pressing issue.

One nitpick over formatting, APreston; would it be possible to space the quotes from the source? I.e:

'Well I never thought he'd get it, but he did, and now he can't get rid of it.'

- Strom Thurmond

That way, I for one find it a lot easier to read. Oh and Hubert Humphrey was generally called the total 'Hubert' rather than only 'Hugh' by his colleagues.
Sure, I can go through and fix that later today.

Otl, Truman stole the votes of civil rights supporters from Henry Wallace by desegregating the military and the Democratic Civil Rights plank. With Patton as the nominee, Wallace's vote will be double or even triple that of otl.

Kefauver is a good pick but unfortunately he is not what Patton needs on the ticket; he needs an experienced legislator, one who knows how to negotiate with Congress. Senator Alben Barkley is that man, having been on the Hill since 1913 and the Leadership in the Senate to boot. He also is Liberal enough like Kefauver to appeal to Northerners and Southerners. In effect there are no major negatives to him except that he is getting on in years.

I'll edit Barkley in then. My main problem with Kefauver ITTL is his age and inexperience in 1948. Unfortunately all the Democrats I know decently well won't start becoming relevant for another few years OTL.

I looked and there were not that many candidates from the Hill that would have met the requirements Patton required for a Running Mate. Basically a Moderate from the Upper South. Barkley was the only one who decently fit most of the requirements and his legislative power was too much to ignore; sort of like an LBJ-Light I guess.

Maybe Lyndon Johnson is your man?

No, he was still a lowly member of the House of Representatives at this time, about to win his first election to the Senate. The LBJ we know would not come about for another couple of years where he would be molded into Russell Long's Protege.

OOC Note: I know I've let this thing die with school and other commitments, but I intend to resume it in the near future and at least carry it through the election over my Winter break. I'd also like to edit out some of the historical goofs I made in my last post but I can't seem to find the edit button, so until I do just assume that its Barkley and not Kefauver as Veep and that Frank McKinney remembers that Grover Cleveland got denied a nomination.
