Blaine 1888 if Garfield Survives and Wins in 1884

How likely is a James G. Blaine candidacy in 1888 if President Garfield survives his assassination attempt in 1881 and wins reelection in 1884?

Also, would Blaine have actually won both the GOP nomination and the U.S. Presidency in 1888 in this TL?

It's too unpredictable if Garfield wins a reelection. Perhaps the stalwarts take back power by then. I think the reformers would still have the edge in 84 since they already had gained considerable clout when Garfield got nominated and I don't think it can be dissipated in 4 years. But 8 is harder to predict.

I think that the Stalwarts stopped being a significant political force after Garfield won his battle with Roscoe Conkling in 1881.
