black republican nominee, what happens?

Yes, but because Cain is Cain.

Generally, Republicans will vote for minorities if they're Conservative. If the Democrat is Conservative, it becomes a lot closer. It took Jindal two tries, and Haley nearly lost in 2010 to her Democraric opponent. 2010. South Carolina.

I'm just looking at the history and civil rights was largely one of the reasons that southern whites switched to voting Republican at the federal level. Just look at Alabama and Mississippi from 1960 to 64.

Think demographics and the human lifespan though. Most of the hard core segregationists that jumped ship from Dixiecrat to GOP in the '60s-early '70s were relatively old at that time and most have been dead for decades with the younger Boomers and later generations tending to be much less racist and accepting the end of Jim Crow. You'll probably see a similar situation in 40-50 years with conservative areas and issues like gay marriage since younger folks tend to be more accepting of it and the older generations that have a problem with it will be dead.

Didn't Haley get accused of having an affair during election season? Even unproven sex scandals tend to hurt reelection chances much more than ones race.
