Black Isle Studios Makes Fallout 3

As some may know, Black Isle Studios was about 95% done the engine for Van Buren, as was around 75% of the dialogue and 50% of the maps, before Bethesda bought the rights to Fallout and the project was cancelled in December, 2003.

So, assume Van Buren is completed before Bethesda buys the rights. Say, Fallout 3 is released at the of 2004. What reception does it get? It was going to be the first Fallout game that included turn based and real time combat, and it was also set to include cooperative multiplayer. For those who don't know the plot and setting: http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Van_Buren

How would this effect the direction of the Fallout franchise? Assuming Bethesda still buys the rights, what does Fallout 4 look like? Similar to Fallout 3?

Interplay was still imploding at this time, so there's probably going to be rushing, and the series' infamous issues with quality control are likely to be even worse than usual.

A lot of Van Buren's elements were ultimately incorporated into the much later Fallout: New Vegas, and done so in (IMO) a much better fashion than the design documents I've read indicated. New Vegas has a freeform story and full, high-quality 3D. Van Buren was much more linear and (from what was released) has graphics that won't age well.

If Bethesda still gets it and makes a new version, Fallout 4 will probably be like Fallout 3 OTL-isolated from the others, maybe add a few knockoff elements from its plot since they just shoved elements of the past stories together in the actual game.
