Black Friday?

is it possible, and under what POD would it take to have the templar order surviving past the time it did? either avoiding the persecutions completely or having a branch of the order remain (not some fictional thing like in some novels, but actually still in the open)?

seeing as it was friday the 13th for me yesterday, i thought it would be good to ask the ? now.

cheers.

EDIT: does not have to be surviving until present day, just how long is realistic?

well, they would have to find a way to continue their calling, either hospitals or fighting, like Hospitalers did. But with hospitalers taking all the good spots where fighting could be done this would be hard. aybe they divide islands between them, Templars taking some, hospitalers others.

I too was going to say found a hospital. On the other hand they could have properly become subordinate to the King of Jerusalem so their bullshit doesn't jepardise the Kingdom.

But once KoJ is gone? As I said, Hospitallers found a way to continue their original mission, fighting infidels, first from Rhodos then from Malta. Continuingthe fight got them on the good side of both secular leaders and papacy, so even if they had money-earning aspect theywere still in good graces.

If the Templars were't independent of KoJs authority then the KoJ's fate may have been different, butterflying away the events which led to their supression.
