Bill Clinton 08

I wrote this some time ago and found it recently when clearing through old files. I thought it was kinda interesting.

Four more years...

Echoing the chants they did in 96 the crowds cheered the president elect addressed the crowd.

In 1996 Colin Powell was elected president of the United States his first four years were guided by a relatively prosperous period of US history. His second term however would be cut short by the 9-11-01 terrorist attacks. Which would lead to the McCain presidency.

John McCain served as vice president of the United States from 1996 until 09-11-01, when the attacks on the white house killed the then president Powell.President McCain would preside over a post 9-11 US and relative recovery until 2008.

It would be then that in 2008 Bill Clinton would run for reelection in an almost unheard of non consecutive term, he would run and he would win.
It would be in May of 2009 that McCain and family would move into the newly reconstructed White House. As the first was destroyed by the terrorist attacks.

If Clinton is (re)elected POTUS in 2008 - though it's highly unlikely that he'd be elected again, 12 years after being turned out of office - then why does McCain & family move into the rebuilt WH in 2009? (And it would actually have been the 3rd WH, as it was the 2nd WH that the terrorists destroyed in '01 in TTL). It could be an interesting story though.

@ Lord Grattan I was somewhat inspired by the alternate universe in the series Fringe I was imaging a timeline where the White House was destroyed and the Pentagon was servilely damaged on 9-11. President Powell unlike George Bush was at home the day the attacks occurred. In this timeline the world trade center was untouched that day they still stand tall.

I speculate that this will be a considerably more conservative US.

Presumably it takes eight years to rebuild it?

But it would still be the third, IIRC: the British burned the first one down in the beginning of the 19th century.

Since BC already served two full terms, this should really be in the ASB forum. A little thingy called the 22nd Amendment prohibts anyone from serving more than two terms as president.

Umm... the OP states that Colin Powell was elected in 1996, so Bill Clinton only served one term ITTL. He is eligible for one more term as a result. ;)

Grover Cleveland served two non-consecutive terms, so it could happen. But Clinton's best bet might be to run again in 2000; his health would be an issue in 2008.
