'Bhopal' in Appalachia

WI there were a comparable incident to the Bhopal poisoning in India in the Continental USA.

Would it have fundamentally changed US attitudes?

Would it have strenghtened class feelings in America.
 
Suppose the methyl isocyanate release happened in Union Carbide's West Virginia facility as opposed to Bhopal, India in OTL. Since you do not have people living in shanties right next to the property line, the number of people affected would have been very, very small. Depending on the wind, you might not even kill anybody.

Actually, Bhopal would've been impossible in America; a series of failsafes required by American law weren't at Bhopal.
 
There was a chemical plant that had the same thing happen to them a few months later in the United States, but on a far smaller scale...
