Better Names for WWII Operations

Operation Bagration is the best WWII operation name, hands down.

Just say it. Syllable by syllable.

It just seems to say "We're the Red Army and we're about to kick your ass all the way back to Berlin."

Most of the German operations are pretty cool, though "Fall Blau" is a bit clunky. The Soviets naming their operations after planets makes me think of Gustav Holst.

Dragoon and Husky aren't very imposing. Some kind of more imposing name would have been better. I personally would have gone for something like 'Poleaxe' or 'Hammerdown'. Something that says "We're going to cut your legs our from under you." If only Battleaxe had lived up to its name.

Though it's not in WWII, I would say that Operation Rolling Thunder is the best-named military operation of all time.

What does Overlord even mean, anyway?

Master, Dominator basically.

Operation Bagration is the best WWII operation name, hands down.

I prefer the soviet legalese name 'Byelorussian Strategic Offensive Operation'

You like the name cause the operation was so awesome and effective lol
I thought they were named after the Roman Deities and not intended to be astronomical references

I always liked Downfall or Unthinkable, they just had a certain ring to them of impending doom

Yeah I like those operations too

Also Operation Vegetarian simply sounds hilarious until you realize how evil it would have been

What......the.......fuck.

I think the most code-names were supposed to be obscure to preserve secrecy. So something might refer to "Operation Torch" instead of "plan to invade Northwestern Africa" or "Exercise on the Weser River" instead of "plan to invade Norway before the Allies do."

But names like "Operation Unthinkable" might give too much away.

I always liked the name Operation Ketsugō (決号作戦 "Operation: Codename Decisive"), even if it is a bit on the nose.

I like British codenames. THey are so lovely non-descriptive. German and American names can give far too much away.
