I'm not talking about the development of better indigenous crops for Australia, that was covered by Lands of Red & Gold pretty well -
this thread also delves into some interesting ideas and is one of the inspirations for this thread - I'm talking about foreign crops that could be brought over that would work with the climate better than the traditional European crops brought over by the British.
As was pointed out in the Lotus thread, the climate of Australia isn't too dissimilar from that of northern India, so the crop package(s) from the Indian subcontinent might be a good fit. Another thread that served as an inspiration for this one was
this thread about a Chola colonisation of Australia which talks about how the climate of northern Australia is pretty similar to that of southern India & how the soil types are comparable.
This thread is what served as the primary inspiration for this one, particularly the assertion that the main problem for OTL Australian agriculture has been a lack of phosphorous in its soil rather than it being shallow or having 'poor quality' due to the lack of volcanic activity on the continent as is commonly stated. That is what made me think that an alternate collection of crops that don't require phosphorous as much as the European ones tend to might be a scenario worth thinking about.
So, uh, yeah. What might be some alternate crops that could be better cultivated in Australia?
