The Austro-Hungarians evaluated the G98 and found it to be less accurate than the Styer-Mannlicher. Seeing as the G98 is renowned even to this day for its reliability and accuracy, that is saying something. The Ross Rifle was also almost a direct copy of it, and the Ross was quite accurate (if unreliable).
 
Saw a 'comparison show' recently that compared the M1903A3, The SMLE and the 98K
one test I had never seen before was using a large clay block as a target. The damage done by the .30-06 and the .303 was much greater than the 7.92 round. based on that I would prefer the Springfield over the Mauser since they both use the same basic action. However the SMLE with the 10 rd mag, smoother bolt operation allowing faster cycle time and better retention of target picture during reload makes it the overall winner.
