In 1861, what would the Union's best strategy be?

War of attrition from the beginning? Burning the Shenandoah asap? No onto Richmond craziness?

Hard to say. I'd go with my gut and say "follow the Anaconda Plan from the get-go."

Burning the Shenandoah asap?

I almost pointed out that the [CSS] Shenandoah was one warship, that it was hardly the worst of the Yankees' problems...

He means this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shenandoah_Valley

The strategically important Shenandoah River Valley was one of the most productive regions of the Confederacy, was considered the breadbasket of the Confederacy, and was a staging point for numerous raids into the Union.

Didn't the Feds have an option that would've split the CSA in half? I vaguely recall reading about a move to the mountains... (Into/along the Shendandoah?) There was also a mention of cutting industrial from agricultural areas, IIRC. I don't recall a source, tho, & ACW is (clearly:rolleyes:) not my area.
