Best Small Arms of WW2

Fortunately we know the ROF 57mm 6 pounder can be changed to 75mm on new guns as this is what happened in OTL. Both so that they could use the same ammunition as US tanks and also to get better HE which is what tanks normally need to use.

Quite.

So, what was the situation RE these weapons having degraded armour penetrating ability with their new calibre?

We were discussing maximising AT gun firepower...

Sticking to actual WW2 technology as used, the 6 pounder, given the best ammuntion, was a perfectly viable anti tank gun throughout the war. It could be used also as a perfectly viable tank gun (and enlarged to 75mm for tank infantry support).
Why not use the 77 mm HV or a similar gun, developed from the ubiquitous Vickers 3-incher (Mod1931)?

I can't help feeling that by the time we're discussing the merits of 77mm anti-tank guns and whether they were suitable to be mounted on tanks, we've strayed rather far from the small-arms of WW2...

In an attempt to link back to the thread: best anti tank rifle bearing in mind they range from AP bullets in standard infantry rifles through to what is really lightweight artillery.
