Well, he did beat the pirates legitimately.

Another guess would be that as the last great hopeful for the republic he garners some sympathy. Crassus was ... indisposed to that challenge and furthermore was a far more controversial figure than the quite virtuous Pompey.
 
I suspect the Parthians have something to do with it.

I think people really underestimate Crassus's abilities as a commander. His square was very much working. It was when the Parthians rode around with Publius's head that he lost his mind and retreated back to Carrhae. He never lost the battle though. It was in a parley with the parthians that he was killed.
