Best Possible post 1918 PoD to seriously muck up the US relationship with the allies?

I'm surprised that no one posted the possibility of Pearl Harbor not happening. If the USA doesn't take a hard line against Japan over its expansions (especially China) nor cut off certain resources, the Japanese might not feel obliged to attack. Without that impetus, there's an argument that the USA would not have entered the war.

Would the US government have been forced into war if the Japanese siezed the Dutch East Indies ? Would the yellow peril press and fears of the safety of the Phillipines been enough to make sure the US was forced to war ?

If the US is not forced into combat with the Japanese and therefore the Axis is it possible they will not fight Germany directly at all ?

If the Japanese had not attacked the USA which is more inward ITTL anyway and not done a pearl harbour but instead focused more on China. Would the USA have gone to war with them anyway or could they have sat uneasily as the Japanese devestated allied possessions in the Pacific ?

Also if it had been down to the allied powers without the US how would the pacific war have gone ? Significantly slower and more costly obviously but how far might the Japanese get ?

Once Indochina was taken, it was largely unavoidable unless Japan withdrew from China. The farther back in time before that date, the more POD's that work, and they tend to be less radical. But given an extremely talented diplomatic team combined with a POD that restrains the Army, the war could have been avoided, even if in early 1941.

I think after the fall of France, any major war involving Japan involves America.

If wave ASB wand, USA is true neutral. Then Japan can likely force the UK to a negotiated peace.
