Alexis did not command troops personally so he does not qualify.
I'm a HUGE fangirl of Rupert, yet voted for Turenne (Wallenstein is a runner-up).

Other: Gustav Horn af Björneborg. He was one of Gustavus Adolphuses most loyal captains and proved himself to be an able commander even on his own.

Huge fan of Turenne, but voted Wallenstein, who was tremendously talented beyond just tactics.

Has to be Conde. Rocroi destroyed Spanish supremacy on Land and ushered in 200 years of French land power.

IMHO quality can shine through when you can take less than ideal circumstances and material and achieve something spectacular so on that basis I voted for Sobieski

I might have chosen differently if we were really looking at naval commanders

Best Regards
Grey Wolf

I actually had Willy, but took him off, to many English already.

Upon a reread...

WHAT?

William III is a Dutchman, thank you very much. And though I know the Dutch weren't known for flashy generals, it's a bit odd not a single Dutchman is on your list in our 'golden age' ;)

Don't know all that much about that general era, but I'll admit I'm a bit partial to Poland, so I'll go with Sobieski on this one.

The problem is of course that the Dutch aren't known at all. Generaly for people who either aren't Dutch or aren't particularly interested in 17th-18th century western European hostory, the Netherlands simply is just a country that exists and nothing more (to be fair, that is still better than a lot of other countries, that people barely know it exists).

I was looking more for ground commanders, de Ruyter is geat though:D

How is noted we are in a English forum!!!!
Three English (Rupprecht is german but fought in England) generals!!! and not Gustavus Adolphus, or Conde, Nassau, Spinola, Cardinal-Infante, Montecuccoli, Horn, Prinz Eugen etc etc etc...

It someone voted by Condé by Rocroi... I vote by CardinalInfante by Nördlingen...
The best was Gustavus Adolphus

No Austrian commanders in the Great Turkish War? Charles of Lorraine and the Margrave of Baden did manage to win Hungary for Austria against significant Ottoman resistance (at least during the early years and at Szlankamen, anyway), which is more than what Sobieski managed to get out of the war.

Sobieski was pretty good. Fighting in the east was a different animal entirely, it was a lot more confused and less technologically advanced, but his use of the Winged Hussars in open battle was truly unique in an era that was fixated on pike and shot tactics.
