Berras Weapons WI: Earlier .50 Caliber Pistol

I'm trying to make a a pair of WI's outside my usual interests. The first one is weapons related discussions.

What if .50 caliber handguns where invented earlier. Looking at Wikipedia, the mechanism where invented in the 80's, and it's automatic-rifle-like mecanism allowed a bigger round.

But assult rifles where old news by then. What if someone invented a similar mechanism and started using a .50 caliber round in say 1965? Exept Dirty Harry using one in the movies, a thought that inspired this tread.

It stays exactly what it is today, a niche market weapon for big bore handgun enthusiasts and posers with small penises and big cars.

been around for a long time?

IIRC, .50 and larger pistols have been around since the early black powder days.

That's one bad thing about having tight gun laws in Australia. It provides a great measure of public safety, but at the expense of people like myself who need a huge handgun to compensate for a small dick.

Yeah, that was my first thought. There's a 19th c. revolver in one of my gun books that chambered .577. Gun companies and movies would have a different history, but i don't see how it would effect the rest of the world.
