Bermuda: The 14th State

Make a POD where the Bermudians, apparently very sympathetic to the colonies and heavily involved in trade, becomes the 14th State of the US.

Well, the French might sink the RN or keep them on their toes

My problem is with population. To be true, this period is the ONLY one where it is feasible as afterwards the populations of all the other states really take off, but I have a feeling that if we compared Bermuda's population in this period to even Rhode Island's it is going to look tiny?

Just not going to happen. Washington could lose multiple battles, pull back and still be a threat in being. The US, even just the eastern seaboard is a huge place.

Bermuda is small, and completely surrounded by water. Might the Bermudans WANT to join the US? Sure. Might the US actually slip in a small force while the RN is busy elsewhere? Sure. Would the Brits allow that result to stand? No way, no how.

As was stated above, that would require the destuction of the RN, which is ... improbable.

Right through to the end of the war?
Anyway, when the OTL peace treaty was ratified the cities of New York and Philadelphia were both still under British control: I could see the rebels relinquishing Bermuda being made a pre-condition for the evacuation of those cities...

Or at the least Bermuda be a sort of De militarized zone or to allow Trade with the US to continue rather then shut down.

I find it weird when my replies are taken to mean that everything else remains as it is, except for the bit we are discussing. Obviously for Bermuda to rebel or fall, the chain of events would need to be substantially derailed against Britain's favour. I don't consider that impossible, or ASB, but I still consider it highly unlikely that Bermuda would be considered for statehood, given its relatively tiny population vis-a-vis the other states.

It would probably affect the generally viewed requirements for population and acceptance of Statehood but then again Bermuda is a geographic and a economic exception. Did Bermuda economic leaders have pull in both North and South considering Bermudan migration to the American South and its importance to colonial trade? It certainly would have an affect on the population representation debate and may throw a wrench into the US Constitution as we know it.

Bermuda has an incredibly small population - it may just end up being annexed to North Carolina.
I heard that Bermuda was originally part of Virginia. Maybe it will join Virginia?

Except Philly wasn't occupied till the end of the war. It was abandoned by Howe in 1778.

There is a way...

If the US stays out of WW1, the Brits run out of collateral in 1917. the US offers to buy Bermuda, Bahamas and the BVI for $75 million which is used by the Brits to continue to buy American grain and raw materials.
