The italian election of 2006 was very close. Just the shift of 0,1% would have give Berlusconi a majority again. Whatever you think about Berlusconi, in the hindsight I wonder if this wouldn´t be better for Italy then the short-lived left goverment and Berlusconis comeback in 2008.

I heard rumors at this time, that it was Berlusconis ultimate goal to become president and in case of electoral victory he would have the majority for this in May 2006. Okay, a Bunga-Bunga-president could be a major embarrassment for Italy, but still it would a clean way to remove Berlusconi from day-to-day-politic. Whoever follows Berlusconi as Premierminister (Fini?) would propably be lmore free to stat reforms and the left wouldn´t betainted by their failed goverment 2006-2008 and the elections of 2011 would see a clean cut. Is this scenarion realistic? Whats your opinion?
