Beria's Soviet Union

I'm new to AH, and had been thinking about some possible ideas to offer the discussion, and here's one I came up with:

It is 1953 in the Soviet Union and Lavrenty Beria, Deputy Premier and head of the feared NKVD, finds out through an informant that the group of Krushchev, Bulganin, Malenkov and Molotov are planning to get rid of him. Fearing for his position and his life, he calls in his security forces, who promptly arrest the four. They are given a quick trial by a " Special Court" composed of Beria's men, are pronounced enemies of the people and are swiftly executed by firing squad. This leaves Beria as leader of the USSR.

What happens next?

Firstly welcome to the board,

Would Beria really act in such a way to remove those very visible public officials like Malenkov and Molotov? I mean I always wonder whether in the soviet union absolutely everyone could be removed.

But besides the means I think Beria would lead the soviet union in a very interesting (in the chinese sense) way. I believe he wished to create a totally neutral Germany and make Yugoslavia more directly part of the Eastern Bloc.

I think he wouldn't follow the horrible agricultural policy that Kruschev pursued and instead have a more pragmatic approach to it. The space race might not really have the same course that it had OTL.

Basically Beria's rule would probably the opposite of Kruschev's.

Maybe the ones who are more public figures get house arrest instead of getting shot?

Also Beria would have to do something about the Army.

A Beria USSR is far less likely than most people would think

The secret police was always very firmly a tool of the party, not that of its own head, had Beria tried a coup, it is very likely that it would have broken down within the NKVD itself

And of course, nobody liked Beria
