Morale-wise it would have been a disaster for the Americans but I don't think it would change the outcome of the war. Controlling the Hudson gives them an advantage in the North but it spreads the British thinner and in the end the war was decided in the South.

The British strategy to divide the colonies via the Hudson was a good one, but it ignored the fact that the American War for Independence would continue so long as the Continental Army exists.
