FORMER CONGRESSMAN RON PAUL SUFFERS STROKE
January 13th, 2015

Corbis-42-34366819.jpg

Former Texas Congressman Ron Paul was rushed to the hospital early this morning after suffering a stroke at his home in Galveston. The hospital staff reported that he was stabilized, but remains in critical condition. Congressman Paul is a popular icon of the Libertarian movement in the Republican Party, and had been doing book tours and speaking events, both paid and nonpaid, to promote his ideas of smaller government, respect for the Constitution, and a noninterventionist foreign policy since his retirement in 2012 following his unsuccessful Presidential bid. The public’s reaction has been almost instantaneous. In the first half hour after the story broke on Twitter, the internet exploded with millions of comments from Paul’s supporters wishing him well, and hoping for a speedy recovery. Also appearing on Youtube were hundreds of video messages both reporting on the story and praying for a speedy recovery.

PRESIDENT ROMNEY DELIVERS STATE OF THE UNION ADDRESS BEFORE CONGRESS
January 20th, 2015

Corbis-42-31934897.jpg

President Romney delivered his State of the Union Address before a joint session of Congress, in which he outlined his plans for 2015. He began by saying that America was still in a state of recovery and proposed a series of new reforms to public programs such as Medicaid and Medicare which are intended to reduce what the President calls “overabundant spending”, which he blames on his predecessor, Barack Obama. The President also made what some are calling a “bold” proposal in the speech, where he announced his support for raising the retirement age to 68, saying that it would help fund Social Security. He then went on to talk about how his administration had been successful in foreign affairs. He touted the Iran war as a massive success in “reaffirming our status as the world’s dominant power, and ensuring the safety of our citizens.” The President closed his speech by encouraging bipartisanship in the new congress, and expressed his hope to work with leaders of both parties to pass legislation favorable to the American people.

NEW YORK GOVERNOR ANDREW CUOMO GIVES DEMOCRATIC RESPONSE TO PRESIDENT ROMNEY’S STATE OF THE UNION
January 20th, 2015

Corbis-42-31115428.jpg

Governor Andrew Cuomo gave the Democratic response to President Romney’s State of the Union last night, where he criticized Romney as “out of touch with the American people” and warned against cutting programs that benefit society. Cuomo said that all Americans should have to pay their fair share, and made the point that those who have more have an obligation to give more to those that have less. The speech was very well received, and political pundits on major news networks dove into speculation on Cuomo’s own political future (the governor had been mentioned since as early as October of 2013 as a possible candidate for the Democratic Presidential Nomination) and on what the upcoming debate over the budget will look like.

Georgia Senator Newt Gingrich, in an open-mic gaffe today, expressed his desire to be the Senate Majority Leader at some point in his Senate career, which he says he intends to serve until he dies. The current Senate Majority Leader, Mitch McConnell, was unavailable for comment. However, Senator Chuck Schumer humorously remarked that his colleague should “keep dreaming.”

ROMNEY RELEASES BUDGET PROPOSAL
February 4th, 2015

Corbis-42-33902935.jpg

The White House released its budget proposal today. The Administration’s proposal calls for a new round of tax cuts for “job creators” as well as reductions in spending on public programs like Medicare and Medicaid. White House Press Secretary Gail Gitcho acknowledged that the Administration’s proposal contained provisions that were unpopular with the public, but stressed that they were necessary for America’s economic recovery. Congressman Paul Ryan has endorsed the Administration’s proposal, and plans to aid the President in passing it through congress. Liberals in Congress like Senators Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders and Congressman Alan Grayson have expressed strong disapproval of Romney’s budget, calling it “a giveaway to the top 1%” and complained that cutting funds to public programs would do more harm than good.

MISSOURI GOVERNOR JAY NIXON LAUNCHES PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN
February 16th, 2015

Corbis-JS001013.jpg

Missouri Governor Jay Nixon announced the beginning of his campaign for the Democratic Party’s nomination for President of the United States today on the steps of the Missouri State Capitol in Jefferson City. The announcement was attended by a crowd of approximately 800 enthusiastic supporters that cheered on the Governor. Nixon announced his hopes of running a positive campaign on the issues, and claimed that he was the only one in the race with the right experience and the right values to defeat Mitt Romney next year. As of now, there are three officially declared Democratic candidates for President: Deval Patrick, Jay Nixon, and Martin O'Malley.

GREAT CALL WITH GINGIRCH! SPOT ON W/ HIS PERSONALITY!

I kinda like Jay Nixon, it'll be an interesting race...

I hate Jay Nixon. But Patrick (though I have a conflict of interest, some relatives worked for him in the DOJ) is awesome. Please have Feingold run and win though! Or Sherrod Brown.

SENATOR SHERROD BROWN LAUNCHES PRESIDENTIAL EXPLORATORY COMMITTEE
February 26th, 2015

Corbis-42-29867790.jpg

Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown launched an exploratory committee earlier today to attempt to drum up support for a potential bid for the Democratic nomination. The Senator had previously visited Iowa and New Hampshire a total of fourteen times between July and November of 2014, raising media speculation that he may enter the race. So far, Senator Brown has not officially declared his candidacy, but it is recognized by many that when a politician launches an exploratory committee, an official announcement of their candidacy is not far behind. Early polling in Iowa shows former Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley in the lead, with Missouri Governor Jay Nixon polling a close second.

CONSERVATIVES HOPE FOR PRIMARY CHALLENGE TO ROMNEY
March 2nd, 2015

Corbis-42-22147456.jpg

The Conservative wing of the GOP, which has repeatedly expressed dissatisfaction with President Romney (specifically how he governs as a centrist instead of a principled conservative), have expressed a desire for another Republican candidate to challenge Romney in their party’s primary. Many Conservatives want a President that is more in line with their ideology, and one that will fight to get what he (or she) wants. Some candidates suggested for this “Anti-Romney” position include candidates who had vied for that same spot against Romney in 2012 such as former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum (who had come in second to Romney), Congresswoman Michele Bachmann, Governor Rick Perry, and Herman Cain. Also mentioned as possible candidates were Washington outsiders like Donald Trump, Kansas Governor Sam Brownback, former CIA Director David Petraeus, and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie. The most attention has gone to Florida Senator Marco Rubio, who is very popular with the Tea Party crowd, and polls the closest to Romney in a theoretical matchup with him. So far, no one has officially declared their candidacy for the Republican nomination, but the presumptive nominee is already President Romney, who is expected to seek a second term.

COLEMAN IN CANADA TO DISCUSS BORDER SECURTIY
March 5th, 2015

Corbis-42-29680506.jpg

US Secretary of State Norm Coleman arrived in Ottawa, Canada yesterday, where he met with Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper to discuss concerns over the security of the US-Canadian border. The Romney Administration had expressed concern earlier this year over the possibility of illegal immigrants, and possibly terrorists, entering the US through Canada. As a result, border security advocates had called on the President to work towards a more tightly patrolled border, and Romney called on Canada to commit itself to the same goal.

March 7th, 2015

Perennial candidate and internet sensation, Jimmy McMillan, has filed paperwork with the FEC to run in the Republican primary against President Romney. McMillan, in an interview with a local television station, stated that the focus of his campaign would be to "lower the defecit" because, in the candidate's own word's "the defecit is too damn high." McMillan's chances of wrestling the nomination away from the President are essentially nonexistant.

Romney invades Iran?!?! I thought he was supposed to fix the economy and deal with the deficit, not double down on it. How is this getting paid for? And given that Iran has 3 times the population and 4 times the area of Iraq, even an iraq level commitment of forces will require everybody in uniform to go. Shinseki's 1 to 50 ratio, which looks awfully prophetic, puts 1.4 million boots on the ground. Does the US even have that many ground troops?

The US has Israeli forces on the ground helping, and also invoked NATO to help with peacekeeping. Romney also gave out more contracts to private security companies to help with peacekeeping operations by using mercenaries as a supplement to the Army so that the US doesn't need to go it alone.

BROWN TIES WITH NIXON IN NEW IOWA POLL
March 27th, 2015

Corbis-42-34245918.jpg

Senator Sherrod Brown and Governor Jay Nixon are tied at 23% each according to a new Iowa poll released this week. Likely Democratic voters in the state have expressed preference for both Nixon and Brown (who is not yet an official candidate) in their state’s primary. The other two candidates in the Democratic race, former Governors Martin O’Malley and Deval Patrick, are polling at 9% and 13% respectively. The remaining 32% of voters are still undecided or have voted for none of the above. In New Hampshire, Governor Patrick leads with an overwhelming 46% of the vote, with Senator Brown as his closest competitor, polling at 22%. However, in a separate poll, a majority of voters who have already expressed a preference say that their choice is not final, and would be open to supporting someone else.

I don't know. In the OTL, he's advocating the Bush tax cuts, which, to me, means he's not serious at all about paying down the deficit. So, it's all rhetoric - like most politicians.
