Beedok's Maps Thread

I've very much enjoyed your 'Sun Sets in the West' series, and the last entry foreshadowed a grand 'Contact War.' Are you going to be releasing any more of that worldline?

Hey, hey, hey!

Any progress on the in progress series?

How about those Here the Sun sets in the West Germany-America-China wins the triple war offshoots you once mentioned? Those draw my interest in a dark way.

And of course I can't forget Planet P!

If nothing thats fine too I don't mean to bug. (But I do mean to bump the thread before I can't find it anymore.)

Ah, I should work on stuff. Just... been job hunting and generally feeling a mess. Apologies.

You can just follow the thread then not everyone gets a notification from the bump.

Out of curiosity, have you ever considered posting your reverse cold war maps here? Sun Sets In The West is good, as is your ISOT series but something about the way you set up the world in your reverse cold war series makes me want to keep coming back to those maps.

I would have to dig it up, but I should probably do that...

Certainly no obligation to go to the trouble of course; I made this post when on a drunken impulse I decided to try and revisit cool map series that I remembered x)

1928 in a world quite different from our own.

The Central Powers triumped in the spring of 1918 when they captured Paris. The situation in the East was quite different from OTL though. Lenin managed to choke on an olive pit in the early days of the war and while the Bolsheviks were attempting to take power they were much less organised. Still the chaos had forced Russia to accept terms. As well the Italians had sided with the CP this time around.

The 1920s have been rather unkind to the CP though. Austria-Hungary simply couldn't come to a good arrangement between Slavs, Hungarians, and Germans. Things collapsed in a bloody fashion in 1925. The Italians slid into fascism, bitter that they gained only table scraps in the peace process. The Ottomans have had trouble of their own.

Meanwhile the economic depression which followed the war hit the US particularly bad. The Entente had owed them vast sums of money they simply couldn't pay when having to also give reparations to Germany. While they negotiated a chance to postpone payments and other compromises the loss of capital still hurt the US. Mismanagement made matters worse, and while she remained neutral in the war the Americans couldn't escape the political extremes which hit the world. In the spring 1927 violence broke out in Kansas city between strikers and police, and quickly spread from there.

The increasing fascist remnants of the Entente have moved in to try and prop up the unpopular military junta in Washington, and the Germans are too busy elsewhere to stop their military rebuilding.

There is one bright spot though, Russia managed to stumble through the 1920s happily and has built itself a democratic institution (mostly by forcing fascists and bolsheviks out at gun point). There's some corruption and the occasional voting irregularities, but apart from New Zealand they're possibly the best place to live around.

1937- Germany invades the Netherlands. Why? The population elected a fascist anti-German government, and after investing so much in the Schleiffen Line forts and so much saber rattling by the French they got a bit jittery. Plus the Dutch monarchy may or may not have invited them before getting arrested (both sides say that happened, but there's not much proof and they both seemed like they were lying when they said it).

At least fighting stopped in North America. The Union of Socialist States of America was able to secure the continental USA (and solved their issues with Mexico). Part of the price was economic concessions, such as discount trucks and coal, but the USSA could handle it. The Emergency Governing Council retains control over Cuba and other Caribbean holdings and Japan is keeping everything they grabbed (Alaska saw some protests, Hawaii is working on gaining protectorate status and more independence).

China remains a mess, but the Sichuan Clique managed to get a friend in Moscow which is trying to grow to be a respected power once more.

Anyway, 5 months later Germany is suffering. The botched invasion of the Netherlands gave the UK and various other faschist powers enough time to deploy troops and push them back. The French and Italians launched enough troops against Germanies fortified borders to spread Berlin's forces too thin to stop the Entente offensive into the under-defended Dutch borders. A daring assault to strike Brussels cut German supply lines on the French border and allowed the French armies to crack the German border defenses. A second prong copied the Schliefen Plan of WWI, replacing the undefended Belgium of the day with a more modern option of Switzerland.

The German army fights on with courage and skill, but a refugee crisis, weariness after nearly two decades fighting to hold their WWI gains, and the damage to their industrial heartland hurts efforts. To make matters worse the French have apparently launched a policy of pillaging and destruction that has forced hundreds of thousands to flee the war front, bogging up roads and logistic lines.

At least they're winning in Hungary? Oh, and the Italians are bungling the invasion of Austria, so that's something, but lack of supplies is preventing any ability to reverse the slow Italian grind.

Egypt's seizure of the Suez Canal has hurt German forces abroad, and the Ottomans are worrying about improving relations between the Fascists and Islamic Cooperative (though it's not as rosy at Istanbul fears).

Communists keep causing trouble across Asia's interior. The Americans grow interested.

Russia claims that they totally aren't giving those weapons to anti-German partisans in Belarus and Ukraine. They . . . stole them, obviously. And some are American, do you really think Russia would give money to Communists?

September 1938: Germany surrenders after roughly a year of bloody defeats and Anglo-French forces flooding into Berlin. A few of her eastern allies continue to fight, hoping to win a few victories that would let them escape the war with dignity and respect (and a better deal than what the Entente has offered). Romania is having a fair bit of luck as Hungary is the only nation really focused on fighting them and Romania is the stronger power. Poland is finding themselves too important to leave free as France seeks a secure link to Russia's resources (everyone knows Russia is supportive of her old Entente allies, she's just shy about it). Finland is managing some success, mostly because the English are busy trying to deal with more violence in India after a failed crackdown merely angered more Indians.

Turkey is surprisingly the most successful Central Power still standing. Bulgaria has kept her borders closed to Entente forces, and is funneling Russian bought supplies to her former ally. This has forced the Italians and their allies to launch the naval invasion dumbed 'Operation Neptune' and . . . it isn't going very well. The Ottomans may have lost a lot of land in the inter-war era, but they gained a great deal of experience and German built weapons. The rough terrain of Anatolia is proving a nightmare for the Tank assault tactics loved by the Entente and the Italians are bleeding badly at every step (along with their allies). To make matters worse the decisions to bring in a religious aspect and call the battle a new Reconquista has soured any chance of local support as Entente forces burn Mosques and Korans (as well as ruining relations with Egypt and her Muslim Confederation).

Bolivia has decided it's a good time to invade Paraguay.

Japan's Northern Clique in China has engaged in a number of border clashes with the mostly English backed Southern Clique. The Japanese are starting to whisper to Russia requests for possible assistance.

The Americans have launched a massive military building project that has the Entente panicking. However, with Germany broken and clear access to Russia's resources nearly secured they don't need American goods any longer. Maybe it's time for a new front...

The Entente launched a trans-Atlantic (or trans-Pacific for the Japanese and Australians) invasion of the USSA in the spring. The American's military had been disorganised by a variety of haphazard purges following a number of coups and counter coups and was caught off guard. Their navy was all but non-existent (though significant numbers of ships were under construction at the time of the invasion bombardment by battleships and carrier based planes destroyed much of this). The English made an attempt to capture Washington which has stalled (more due to logistical issues than the American's military). The invasion from Florida has seen many White southerners rise up against the New African Governate authorities and is going quite well. The assaults from the North have gone relatively well, but lackluster support by the Canadians (and even some sabotage) has hurt efforts.

The latest American 'President for Life', John 'Johnny' Irons, has managed to find a compromise with other members of the Worker's Congress to accept a 'no coups until the invasion is dealt with' cease fire. A lot of the militart commanders he doesn't trust have been given 'honourable' assignments on the more dangerous fronts though, and a couple others died of 'food poisoning', so it seems that Johnny Irons will be here for a while.

The Chileans government is meanwhile singing praises to the Andes as the mountains defend them from Entente Fascists to the East.

Four days ago though something exceptional has happened. On June 6th the Japanese (tired of Russian aid flowing into the hands of Chinese partisans) chased a Chinese Guerilla army across the border into Mongolia (which recently signed up for the Eurasian Economic Union), and destroyed a town where the Chinese partisans had attempted to find shelter. 2 500 Mongolian citizens died and the Mongolian Army clashed in open battle against the Japanese (and lost to the Japanese pretty badly).

Tokyo expected this would remind Moscow to show Japan respect. The Russian people however are demanding blood. Especially as Russian newspapers have flooded the public with tales of Japanese autrocities in China (many of which were previously mentioned in passing with smaller articles, but now are the front page of every newspaper). The Russian bear is awakening, and seems to be ready to attack the forces who mistook it for a cautious ally.

Russian entry into the war against them ruined the Entente's war plans. They've been forced into a panic, having realised that the combined industrial might of the USSA and Russian bloc significantly outweighs their own. The French now regret tearing up German factories in an effort to push the Germans back to an agrarian society. Food and oil shortages are starting to become an issues for the Entente as well, cut off from two of the world's most productive bread baskets and largest oil producers (especially as Russian forces surge into an already shakey Iran).

The Entente have decided to try one last major push into the USSA industrial heartland, hoping to break their military capabilities for the forceable future. Some abmitious French commanders hope to cross the Appalachians and take Washington (while the English retreated the forces in Deleware to concentrate on other fronts).

The American's meanwhile are pouring into a relatively receptive western Canada as riots break out across Quebec and Ontario by socialist agitators. The Russians are far more cautious, worried about a repeat of the bloodbath that toppled the Tsar. Luckily for them they've gained significant experience in the last couple decades cleaning out their Bolsheviks, the Russian Army is possibly the best run on earth. Their airforce is the real icing on the cake though, with well run factories in the Urals out of the range of their enemies the Russians are churning out aircraft faster than the Entente could hope to (the Americans can manage similar numbers, but instability and purges have chased some of the better aircraft designers away).

German partisans have unleashed a wave of sabotage against Entente forces making supply lines across Germany at least as difficult as those across the Atlantic. The Bulgarians, Romanians, and Ottomans meanwhile are proving that together they're easily a match for Italian, Spanish, and other Fascist forces in the Balkans. Ukrainians are also doing quite well (with nearly 10 million more people than OTL they're clearly a major power).

The Fall of Winnipeg was a turning point in the war. With rail lines cut off the few Entente soldiers present in the area were cut off and overwhelmed by local communist partisans. This actually made life a bit difficult for the American forces moving north as the Canadian communists were rather more ideologically purist (having developped a strong opinion on true communism vs. totalitarian statism they saw under fascism). Still, they've both agreed to focus on the true enemy.

With the collapse in the West the Entente lost confidence in Canada and effectively supplanted the Ottawa government, pushing many Canadians into the Communist bloc. The Entente position in North America is collapsing on every front. South America is going better, but is far less important.

Meanwhile Eastern Europe sees the Russians advance cautiously with their allies. They've focused on the air war as much as possible, realising that aerial supremacy will make their lives a lot easier as they cross into the ever narrowing and more mountainous regions of central Europe. Persia and the other Entente forces in the Middle East have effectively collapsed, but Russia's begrudging support for communist and islamist partisans has made a proper invasion of India rather tricky.

The Japanese are effectively collapsing on all land fronts, their army have bled too much to recover from. Their only saving grace right now is the strength of the IJN being second only to the RN, and king of the Pacific. The American and Russian shipyards are quietly building up though.

Canada has fallen. Well, most of it. A sickly remnant of the Canadian government has avoided USSA assaults by just not being worth it (as far as anyone knows). A Franco-English army was effectively trapped in the Montreal pocket as American forces captured Trois-Rivieres, and Entente morale took a massive blow.

Inspired by this massive defeat Communists and Islamists in India have risen up (Hindu nationalists are musing an uprising of their own). The English have been forced into a panic, while Russian forces launched a dearing bombing raid on London proper.

Through careful diplomacy (and fears of communists) Brazil has crafted the Coalition for Latin American Democracy. This fledgeling alliance as teamed up with other anti-Entente forces and is attempting to kick the Fascists out of South America. They were a little over ambitious though, and while they're winning it's been a rather clumsy affair.

Meanwhile Russian and Chinese forces have met up in the liberation of Beijing, a victoria that led to the IJA being effectively dismantled and put under IJN control, with the new concept of winning anywhere that's an island (or lacks rail connections). The landings in Kamchatka have just lead to Russians deciding they want unconditional surrender from Japan. It'll be a hard to manage goal with Russia's lack of Pacific naval forces, but they're going to try.

Speaking of Entente naval supremacy, the Russian Black Sea Fleet, combined with Ottoman and Ukrainian forces, finally outnumbers the Entente, and their submarine fleet has begun raids in the Western Med, hurting Entente supplies to North Africa and helping bring Egypt into the war.

The Russian submarines from the Baltic and Arctic are also starting to threaten the UK as Russo-Finnish forces acquire new ports in Norway. They can't win a surface battle yet, but communications with the US and raids on Entente merchant fleets are becoming more and more reliable. The USSA hasn't been twidling their thumbs either. While cheeply made their new mass production of naval vessels is building a navy which will rival the Entente (it'll take time though).

6 years in the war has grown to be the bloodiest in human history and seems set to last a few years still.

Though maybe some important cargo crossing the Arctic Ocean can speed it's end. The Canadian Government remnant lost all loyalty to the Entente when the Prime Minister was arrested (deemed a 'communist sympathiser' for having not cracked down hard enough). The remnants are no communists though, and their last hold outs in the NWT contained a mine with some very interesting products and the Entente's brightest researchers on the subject of this interesting metal. Sure most of the English and French researchers are being held at gun point, but there's enough Canadians and Scots (who've heard rumours London is cracking down rather nastily on Scottish peace protests) to show the Russians this neat little idea. Oh, and a couple German prisoners hoping to be reunited with countrymen who fled to Russia years earlier. The low price to be given this research? Amnesty for the Canadian Government in Exile. It's better than the Americans or Entente would give.
