Battle of the Bands: Nü-Metal vs. Post punk revival fans duke it out

Mods vs. Rockers. Disco Demolition Night. The East Coast–West Coast hip hop rivalry. The anti-emo riots of Mexico. There have been many cases where musical subcultures have warred with each other for different reasons.

One popular narrative is that the rise of garage rock revival bands of the '00s- the Strokes, the White Stripes, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, the Hives, and the Vines- to name a few of the heavy hitters- was backlash against nü-metal. And for a brief shining moment for a few years to the mid-'00s, they really did save rock, or at least in the pages of NME and on Pitchfork. To stereotype the aesthetics of the two- nü-metal is aggro, angsty, often white boy angry. "The" bands were chic, NY indie underground, skinny jeans or matching suits- quite opposite form of masculinity, even if Carlos D of Interpol liked to go around wearing a gun holster.

So what if fans of both got into fist fights. No, Jack White beating up the Von Bondies guy doesn't count, that was internecine.
