Smolensk, 1941.
The first check on German Blitzkrieg. The hold-up was significant as it lead to:
1) Hitler kept going at Smolensk. Maybe something else should have been attempted as time was running low
2) Change in focus: Moscow or Ukraine/Donbas
3) Kiev, another "great victory" which took too many resources to conclude
The question is: Could Germany have done something different to not lose time at Smolensk?
AND: What would have been the outcome?
Ivan
Werth has a lot to say about Smolensk.
