IIRC the problem of a powerful Sultanate of Iconium was still there, however the destruction of so much of the Romaioi Army and Manuel's early death was a serious one-two punch that led to the rise of Andronicus (bad) and the Angeli (worse).
Alexus II would have to be pretty incompetent to be worse than what Constantinople got.
