During the last part of the War of the Spanish sucsesion, the battle at Malplaquet took place. The battle was turned in to a phyrric victory for the allies under Marlborrough. The alied troops where mowed down by the thousends agains a well duged in French army. The battle was called a victory for the Allied troops because the French troops left the field.
Only the victory was costly, around 21000 dead/wounded for the alllies and around 11000 dead/wounded for the French and the French retreat was orderly.
This ''victory'' gave more amonution for the Tory party in English pairlment to quit with the war an make a separate peace.
Suppose Marlborough and Prince Eugene of Savoy investigate the fortyfied positions of the French and desided not to attack, or attack the French with a much better plan resulting in a real defeat of the desperate French army. Resulting in a victory for Marlborough like Blenheim.
Opening the way into Franche.
How could this war continue then and how would a peace treaty the looks in lets say 1711 in stead of 1713?
