The battle of Gemas, fought on January 14, 1942, was a rare Allied victory of the Malayan campaign against the Japanese. An Australian battalion managed a successful ambush of a Japanese column coming over a bridge, blowing the bridge, trapping a number of Japanese forces who didn't even have access to their guns as they'd tied them to their bicycles. At one point, Japanese artillery even helped the Australians by accidentally landing on their own forces.
Yet one event stood out to me. Despite the success, several Japanese located and cut a telephone cable the Australians had hidden in the jungle, making it impossible for the Australians to call in their own artillery support to add to the pressure on the Japanese.
Suppose that somehow the Japanese don't manage to find and cut the phone line, either the troops that found it being shot dead before they can find it, or the Australians doing a better job of covering it up.
How might things go if the Australian commander can bring his own artillery support into the fight, and add a few hundred more casualties to the Japanese losses.
