Here are the scores for Sunday, August 9:

White Sox 6, Brewers 1
Orioles 5, Red Sox 4
Yankees 4, Blue Jays 2
Rangers 2, Indians 0
Tigers 10, Royals 1
Angels 6, Athletics 1

Here are the final standings in the East:

(tie) Yankees: 47-34
(tie) Brewers: 47-34
Red Sox: 46-35- 1 GB
Tigers: 45-36-2 GB
Orioles: 42-39-5 GB
Indians: 40-41- 7 GB
Blue Jays: 33-48- 14 GB

In the West:

Rangers: 44-37
(tie) Royals: 43-38- 1 GB
(tie) Athletics: 43-38- 1 GB
Angels: 38-43- 6 GB
(tie) Twins: 35-46- 9 GB
(tie) White Sox: 35-46- 9 GB
Mariners: 33-48- 11 GB

Now to discuss the Division Series:

In the East, the Yankees are already first-half champions. Therefore, the Brewers have been awarded the second-half championship, and they will face the Yankees in the ALDS East, with the Yankees (50-31 in the first half) having home field advantage because they had the better record in the half they won.

In the West, the Rangers have won both halves and will host all five games of the ALDS West. The Angels will be their opponent because they had a better record in the first half (46-35) than either the A's or the Royals had in the second half.

Coming soon: The ALDS West, Take 3.

I've decided to make a change in my playoff format. I'll explain as I go through my postseason, division by division,

NL West:

Stays exactly the same. The Dodgers beat the Astros in a five-game NLDS.

AL East:

Stays exactly the same. The Yankees beat the Brewers in a five-game ALDS.

NL East:

The Cardinals won both halves. Instead of choosing one second-place team over the other, I've decided to have the two second-place teams play a one-game playoff for the right to meet the Cardinals in the NLDS. It's already taken place at Olympic Stadium on October 5, and the Expos beat the Phillies 3-1, as they did in Game 1 of their real-life NLDS. The Expos then swept the Cardinals in three games to claim the NL East title, as we saw earlier in the thread. The Dodgers then beat the Expos in five games to win the National League pennant.

AL West:

The Rangers won both halves. There was a tie for second in each half including four different teams, so we're going to have a four-team single-elimination tournament to determine the overall second-place finisher. Game 1 has already taken place, as the teams who tied in the second half, the A's and Royals, met at the Oakland Coliseum. The A's won 4-0 thanks to a shutout by Mike Norris.

Next: The other "semifinal" in the AL West second-place tournament, as the teams who tied in the first half, the Angels and White Sox, meet at Comiskey Park in Chicago, Dave Frost will start for the Angels, while Britt Burns goes to the hill for the White Sox.

Now it's time for the American League West playoff game between the Angels and the White Sox from Comiskey Park in Chicago. The date is Monday, October 5:

Weather: 61 degrees, cloudy skies, south wind between 5-6 MPH.

Here are the umpires for tonight's game:

Home Plate: Russ Goetz
First Base: George Maloney
Second Base: Ken Kaiser
Third Base: Marty Springstead
Left Field: Joe Brinkman
Right Field: Dale Ford

Angels 2nd: Designated hitter Butch Hobson led off with a single to left. Center fielder Juan Beniquez singled to left center to put two men on. The runners held while right fielder Dan Ford flew to Chet Lemon in shallow center for the first out. Third baseman Bert Campanneris forced Beniquez , with Hobson moving to third. That brought second baseman Bobby Grich to the plate. Here's NBC's Bob Costas:

"For those of you who are wondering what happens after tonight, the winner will meet the A's to determine the team who takes on the Rangers in what's being called the ALDS West. This will be another one-game playoff, and it will take place at 4PM Eastern tomorrow here on NBC in between the two National League games. Tim McCarver and I will bring you the game, which will take place at the Oakland Coliseum since the A's won both coin flips. The winner heads for Arlington, where the Division Series will start on Wednesday. Our friends at ABC will take over the telecasts at that point.

One last note: Contrary to the original plan for the Division Series, the second-place team will get two home games as usual. However, they will be Games 4 and 5, which means that the team that won both halves will get a chance to sweep the series without having to go on the road. Of course, if it comes to a Game 5, the theoretical second-place underdogs would have the home-field advantage.

GRICH WITH A HIGH FLY TO DEEP CENTER! BACK IS LEMON, AT THE TRACK, AT THE WALL, IT'S GONE!...........Bobby Grich brings us back to the present by whacking Britt Burns' one-one pitch over the wall in center, and just like that it's 3-0 California."

McCarver: "Grich sees that this pitch is a little lower than he thought it would be and adjusts his swing accordingly. On a warmer evening, this would have been an upper-deck shot, but it still gets over the wall by a considerable margin,"

Shortstop Rick Burleson grounded to Tony Bernazard at second to retire the side, but Grich's three-run homer has given the visiting Angels a 3-0 lead after an inning and a half. (Center)

White Sox 3rd: After two out, right fielder Harold Baines lifted a fly to center. Juan Beniquez raced back to try to make the catch, but tripped and fell, and the ball bounced off the tip of his glove and rolled away. Baines ended up at second as a result of the error. Designated hitter Greg Luzinski lined a base hit up the middle to bring Baines home and put the Pale Hose on the board. Left fielder Wayne Nordhagen flew to his counterpart Brian Downing to retire the side, but the Pale Hose are on the board thanks to a hit and a two-base error. After three, it's Angels 3, White Sox 1.

Angels 7th: Dan lined a leadoff double off the right field wall. Campaneris singled up the middle to bring Dan home and extend the Angels' lead to 4-1. Campaneris then stole second, but was stranded there when Sox starter Britt Burns retired the next three batters in order: Grich grounded to third, Burleson's liner was gloved by Sox shortstop Bill Almon, and left fielder Brian Downing struck out swinging. The Angels have added a run on two hits and a stolen base while leaving Campaneris at second, and as we stretch on the south side of Chicago, it's Halos 4, Pale Hose 1.

Angels 9th: Beniquez led off with a single to right against Chicago reliever LaMarr Hoyt. Dan cued a grounder to short that was muffed by Almon, allowing Dan to reach, Campaneris flew to Lemon in left center for the first out, with Beniquez moving to third. Grich dumped a base hit into left that scored Beniquez with the fifth California run while Ford moved to third, Burleson slapped a single to left that scored Dan to make it 6-1 while Grich moved to third.

Downing forced Burleson for the second out while Grich came home with run number seven. First baseman Don Baylor followed with a double to right that scored Downing to make it 8-1. Catcher Ed Ott flew to Lemon in right center to end the inning, but the visitors have scored four runs on four hits, an error, a force play, and a productive fly ball while leaving Baylor at second. The Angels are three outs away from the tournament final against the A's, and they lead the White Sox 8-1.

White Sox 9th: With one out, Almon faced Angels reliever Bruce Kison and hit a one-pitch over the wall in left center for a solo home run to cut the Angels' lead to 8-2. Lemon took a called third strike for out number two, but Bernazard kept the game going with a lined single to right center, which brought Baines to the plate. The future White Sox legend lifted a fly to right, where Ford made the catch that allowed the Angels to advance. Final score : Angels 8, White Sox 2.

Grich was named Player of the Game by NBC. He went two for five with two runs scored, a home run, and four RBIs. Kison deserves an honorable mention; ge held the Sox to one run on six hits over the final five innings.

I lost the sim before I could note the final totals.

W- Kison (2-1)
L- Burns (16-13)

HR- CAL: Grich (29)
CWS: Almon (9)

Next: Second place will be decided in the AL West, as the A's host the Angels on Tuesday, October 6. First pitch is scheduled for shortly after 4PM Eastern, with Geoff Zahn starting for the Angels and Steve McCatty pitching for the A's.

Now it's time for the American League West second-place game from the Oakland Coliseum. The date is Tuesday, October 6:

Weather: 66 degrees, cloudy skies, west wind at 8 MPH.

Here are the umpires for today's game:

Home Plate: Jerry Neudecker
First Base: Larry McCoy
Second Base: Durwood Merrill
Third Base: Joe Brinkman
Left Field: Dale Ford
Right Field: Russ Goetz

Angels 3rd: Juan Beniquez led off with a lined single to left. He moved to second on third baseman Butch Hobson's bouncer to third. then stole third himself. Right fielder Larry Harlow beat out a bouncer to short for an infield single to bring Beniquez home and give the Halos a 1-0 lead. Shortstop Rick Burleson struck out swinging for the second out. First baseman Daryl Sconiers flew to Rickey Henderson in left center field to retire the side, but the Angels have scored first thanks to two hits, a groundout, and a stolen base. After two and a half, it's Angels 1, Athletics 0.

Angels 6th: With one out, Burleson lined a single to right center. Sconiers' single up the middle put runners at the corners, and designated hitter Don Baylor brought Burleson home with a sacrifice fly to Henderson in left that increased the Halos' lead to 2-0. Bobby Grich walked on five pitches to put two men on, but Brian Downing's popup was caught by the Athletics' Rob Picciolo to end the inning. The Halos settle for a run on two hits, a walk, and a sacrifice fly while leaving runners at first and second. After five and a half in Game 164, it's Halos 2, Swingins 0.

Athletics 6th: Right fielder Tony Armas led off with a fly ball down the line in left that fell in for a bloop double. Third baseman Wayne Gross' lined single to right put runners at the corners. First baseman Jim Spencer flew to Harlow in right for the first out. Second baseman Dave McKay forced Gross, which allowed Armas to come home and put the home squad on the board. Catcher Jeff Newman singled to left to put two men on.

That was all for Angels starter Geoff Zahn; Andy Hassler relieved and retired Picciolo on a shallow fly to Beniquez in center to end the inning. The Athletics are back in the game thanks to a run on three hits and a fielder's choice while leaving runners at first and second. At the end of six, it's California 2, Oakland 1.

Athletics 7th: With two out, designated hitter Cliff Johnson singled to left and was run for by Mitchell Page. Armas slapped a base hit past the mound and up the middle to put runners at the corners. Gross' bloop single to right scored Page to tie the game and moved Armas to third. With Spencer at the plate, Angels manager Gene Mauch replaced Hassler with Don Aase, whose first pitch sailed to the backstop, allowing Armas to score and giving the A's a 3-2 lead. Gross moved to second on the wild pitch, but Spencer's liner was caught by Sconiers to end the inning. The A's have taken the lead thanks to two runs on three hits and a wild pitch while leaving Gross at second. After seven, it's Athletics 3, Angels 2.

That was all the scoring. Baylor singled to lead off the ninth against Athletics' starter Steve McCatty. Bert Campaneris ran for him and stole second, then moved to third on Downing's bouncer to second. The California season came down to catcher Ed Ott. Here's Bob Costas with the count one ball and one strike:

"Even with the tying run at third and a decent hitter at the plate, no one's up in the Oakland bullpen. Whether that changes if Ott drives Campaneris in, we'll have to wait and see. McCatty's thrown 115 pitches, which is a reasonable day's work for anyone. Beniquez is waiting on deck should Ott get on, followed by Butch Hobson.

McCatty's ready. gets the sign from Newman, checks Campaneris at third, stretches, now the pitch......hit down to second, McKay up with it, has time, throws to first, AND THE A'S WIN SECOND PLACE!.....Not much jubilation from the A's, as they're thinking about five games in five days, three of them on the road against the relatively well-rested Rangers. In order to play here again this year. they'll need to win one of those three. The series starts tomorrow at Arlington Stadium,

Our Player of the Game is Steve McCatty, who pitched a complete game, allowing two runs on six hits while walking one and striking out eight, He threw 116 pitches. Wayne Gross was three for four with an RBI to lead the offense, and both Jeff Newman and Tony Armas were two for four; Newman also scored twice. Dwayne Murphy was hitless in two official at-bats, but he also drew two walks. The only Angel with more than one hit was Rick Burleson, who was two for four and scored a run, Starting pitcher Geoff Zahn held the A's to one run on six hits in five and two-thirds innings, but ended up with a no-decision.

That wraps it up from the Oakland Coliseum. Up next is Game 1 of the NLDS West from the Astrodome in Houston as the Astros host the Dodgers. Joe Garagiola and Tony Kubek will be on hand to bring you the action, but we have about ten minutes, so we'll take a quick break, then go to New York for a review of the day's action with Bryant Gumbel. If there's time, we'll show you Tim McCarver's interview with Steve McCatty from the Oakland clubhouse, If not, we'll show it just before Game 2 between the Expos and the Cardinals tomorrow.

Our final score: the Oakland A's 3, the California Angels 2. For Tim McCarver, I'm Bob Costas saying so long from Oakland. Bryant Gumbel is next after these messages."

Final totals: Athletics 3-10-0, Angels 2-6-1,

W- McCatty (22-13)
L- Hassler (4-8)

The A's went on to defeat the Rangers in four games to win the AL West, but they were swept in three games by the Yankees in the ALCS, as they were in real life. The Dodgers defeated the Yankees four games to two in the World Series to win the world championship, again as in real life.

Next: To be determined.
