Banner of the Golden Sun (v.2)

This is the 2nd version of my TL. I'll be using a different POD, since I found out that my previous one had too many complications. Hopefully this one won't hit the wall. Without further ado, let's begin...

1814

March 24

The restored King of Spain Fernando VII decreed the abolishment of the 1812 Constitution and arrested its supporters, putting Spain under autocratic rule.

1820

January

In response to the king's heavy-handed rule, Spanish Army colonel Rafael del Riego led a series of uprisings against the government.

March
The rebels seized Madrid. Out of fear for his life, Fernando VII reluctantly reinstated the 1812 Constitution. This was the start of the Trienio Liberal; three years of liberal rule in Spain.

1823

April 7

France launched a military expedition in Spain, with the aim of restoring Fernando VII's absolute rule. They were named "Hundred Thousand Sons of Saint Louis".

May 24
The Sons of St. Louis captured Madrid, but the Liberals had already retreated to Cádiz.

June 1
In the Philippine Islands, army captain Andrés Novales led a rebellion against the colonial government in response to its discriminatory policies against the criollos. The mutineers managed to seize most of Manila, but their target, General Mariano Fernández Folgueras survived and successfully fled the city. The rebels advanced into Fort Santiago, which was guarded by Antonio Novales, Andrés' brother. After brief negotiations, Antonio's army surrenders the fort and joined the rebels, completing the conquest of the Philippine capital.

1823

June 3

After Novales' victory in Manila, several uprisings occured throughout Tondo [1]. In the outlying provinces several militia armies rose up, overthrowing the ruling governments and replacing them with their own independent juntas. Others directed their fury upon the friars, some of which were brutally executed by angry mobs.

June 4
Taking advantage of the ongoing event, famous insurgent leaders Juan de Silvestre and Luis de los Santos launched several raids against Spanish positions in Batangas, Cavite and La Laguna [2].

More criollo soldiers and officers revolted at Fort San Felipe, in the port of Cavite Nuevo [3]. Commanders of the Royalist fleet stationed there attempted to put down the uprising, but the sailors and officers refused orders and started their own mutiny, taking over dozens of ships. However, the fleet in Manila Bay reaffirmed its allegiance to the Spanish Crown, and started bombarding Manila's coast.

June 6
In the province of Pampanga, Governor General Juan Antonio Martínez ordered full mobilization of Spanish troops to retake the capital city.

June 7
Filipino liberals led by Count Luis Rodríguez Varela held an open meeting in Cavite El Viejo [4], to form a new government to replace the Captaincy General. Varela urged the other provinces to send their delegations.

Rebel forces under Novales headed north to Bulacan to stop the Royalists' counterattack.

June 9
The provinces of Camarines [5] and Ibalon [6] renounced its allegience to Spain and formed their own juntas, sparking rebellions across the Bicol region.

June 12
Delegates from 8 provinces (Tondo, La Laguna, Batangas, Cavite, Bulacan, Tayabas, Camarines and Ibalon) signed the Philippine Declaration of Indenpendence, and began preparations for drafting a constitution.

Just a side note:

I'm not plagiarizing El Maestro's TL. I'm just using a similar POD but I have a different plan. It was actually his TL that inspired me to revamp this one.

Just sayin'...

1823

June 13

A provisional national government was created by the Cavite Congress, which declared the incorporation all the rebelling provinces into one single independent nation: the United Provinces of the Philippine Islands (commonly known as the Philippine Republic).

June 14
The Revolutionist army under Andrés Novales fought against Juan Antonio Martínez and the Royalist forces in Malolos, Bulacan. With efficient use of guerilla tactics, the rebels gained victory.

June 17-18
From Bataan, Mariano Rodríguez Folgueras led an invasion force of 3,000 troops to reclaim Manila. The landings in Manila Bay were largely successful, but faced tenacious resistance from the rebels commanded by José Bayot. The Revolutionists gained the upper hand however, when they were joined by 2,000 Chinese volunteers, which finally pushed the Royalists back into the sea. Despite this victory, the city still found itself under siege.

The fledgling Revolutionist navy in Cavite launched its first attacks against Spanish vessels. They scored their first victory near Batangas, sinking 4 Royalist ships.

June 19
Elections were held for the top positions of the republican government. Varela was elected as President, Pedro Pérez de Tagle as Secretary of Interior and José de Azcarraga as Secretary of War.

June 22
Nueva Ecija's colonial government was finally overthrown by a combined insurgent army of criollos, mestizos, and indios. Its newly-founded junta proclaimed allegiance to the republic.

When he learned of Nueva Ecija's fall, Governor Martínez rushed back to Pampanga to launch a counterattack against the Neoecijano insurgents.

June 27
The Revolutionist forces seized San Rafael, putting all of Bulacan under Republican hands.

June 30
Juan de Silvestre finally swore allegiance to the republic. He was appointed to lead an invasion force for the liberation of Visayas.
