Bangladesh Rejoins India After 1971 Liberation War

Was there any chance of Bangladesh reuniting with India after it achieved independence from "West Pakistan" in 1971? I really don't know if anyone proposed it at the time. Maybe the war goes a little longer and the infrastructure/human capital/intelligentsia are more heavily damaged?

This would really screw up Pakistan going forward, by the way, since the whole point of Pakistan was that Muslim Indians couldn't get a fair deal from the rest of India under majority rule and they need their own country. If a huge Muslim population joins India, the main purpose is invalid.

I don't think Indira Gandhi would have risked a move like this one, because she would have been seen as a warmongering conqueror risking to cause international sympathy towards Pakistan, and annexing a majority Muslim region... Would have been too dangerous for Indian stability, as things weren't already shaken enough at the time.

She got what she wanted in this war: humiliated Pakistan, appear splendid by granting indipendence to Bangladesh, and considering the current state of the country India surely gained in not annexing it. Just think of the throwed governative money in the attempt to revitalize Bangladesh...

Only way that Bangladesh can be part of India is totally unified India. Post-independent India wouldn't annex Muslim majority nation if leaders aren't total idiots.

There was no interest on the part of India in annexing a desperately poor and overwhelmingly Muslim territory like Bangladesh, and no interest on the part of Bangladeshis in their territory becoming Indian. They were fighting for their independence, after all, not for reunification with West Bengal within India.
